Hi guys!

I have no idea what my wife was thinking when she installed Rocket Torrents. She has no clue what it does. I wasn't there when she installed it, so I have no idea how to get rid of it, which is why I am writing. Immediately after she installed it, she had difficulty doing normal, everyday things ranging from posting on Craigslist, to checking her e-mail to opening more than one tab on her browser.

She said she tried uninstalling it, but that it didn't work. The home page is set to go to Google, and Rocket Torrents proudly pastes their logo all over it. Obviously, this thing isn't dead yet! I have only clicked on the "delete application" X on the LEFT side of the screen, and that bit of real estate disappeared at least.

Any clues or hints on how to finish the removal of this most UNhelpful piece of software would be greatly appreciated, given that I have no clue how far along or not far along the uninstall process actually is.

All I was really looking for at the moment was a b/t client that dosent hog resources and will allow fast uploads. The first thing this wanted to do was re d/l a file i already have that I was wanting to seed.I will keep it a while and try some d/l with it later but for now i gotta find a replacment for microtorrent as latley it has started acting up on me.for no reason my downloads will drop speed from over 400kb/s up to next to nothing and may stay that way for hours or may fix themselves almost instantly back to the original speed only to start the process over again almost instantlyt.I have tried every fix i could find that was even remotley related to no avail.I hope this is seen and a way is put in where I can restart a finished torrent just to seed as i like the looks of this client and the way it behaved while i had it running seemed very professional. roger

If you think it merits an article, that's fine by me.

Ok

I installed and set this up the way I would use a P2P app like this ( I normally don't use apps like this ).
I'll explain that in a bit.

I already described installation, and that went well, but one the that I like the LEAST about these
type of clients has not changed ......

By default, it sets up your shared folder as visible and accessible to anyone else.
It is pretty easy to 'unshare' folders and disable partial torrent sharing though.

I set it up pointing to an empty folder to store downloaded torrents, disabled the default shared folder,
( thus sharing nothing ), so that after a download completes I can IMMEDIATELY move it to another
drive for more permanent ( and invisible ) storage.

Once using the File, Connect, option to connect to the Rocket network it works pretty much like most
clients does.
Click the Music tab brings up a nice list of popular titles, with a 'star' grading system for rating the quality
of the file. Users vote. This may weed out fakes, but I am not knowledgable enough about the workings
of these clients to know if it can be spoofed.
Downloading from this list can be pretty speedy .. if I actually downloaded, which I never do ;) ,
even from the worst possible location, my workshop which is pretty far from my wireless router,
so my signal is pretty low. The software detected my firewall, but I really didn't have to tweak it to
get good speed, that is, if I were to download .. which I never do ;) .

The Torrents tab brings up a sizeable list of aggregated torrents on the main screen, with a category list on the left.
This makes it pretty easy to locate what you want. The list of torrents is easily sortable in the standard Windows
way ... Click on Name to sort ascending/Descending etc ..
Naturally, there wasn't anything on this list that I would DL ;) so I used the 'Search' feature located right above
the category list.

It's a Google search :).

It brings up a browser window of a google search for the torrent you wanted .... nice little poke in Googles nose.
Using this search I found the latest version of Ubuntu ( I'm still on Hardy Heron so this I WOULD DL ).
Once again Dl speed was actually pretty decent for my location ... I was impressed, since I didn't have to
do ANY tweaking to get acceptable performance.

Nice and easy for the novice.

I haven't played with the movie and TV streaming yet, but I twiddled with the streaming radio a bit and it
worked well, though it's not a feature I would normally use.

So far the only thing I don't like is that sharing is ON by default.

I know you guys mean well but by this time you have to be aware that having sharing on by default
is a problem.
IMO it should be disabled by default and let the USER turn it on of they want to risk it.
There are those that will not let a person 'leech' but there are always many more that don't care,
especially OUTSIDE the US, so I can't stress this enough, if you want to use a client like this it
is in your best interests to turn OFF sharing. It may take you a little longer to get what you want,
but the risks, small as they may be aren't worth it.

Set your Download path to an empty directory, that is not shared, and as soon as you have the
file you want, move it to another location and keep that folder empty, so there is nothing for
any prying eyes to see.

Thats about all I have time for for a bit, I am swamped with work due to a new rootkit keylogger
trojan that's been making the rounds, and is a bitch to remove.

@ Dredd, Yes please evaluate this and find a way to let us p2pnet lurkers know how it performs!
I've used some of these derivitive forms of Limewire in the past, but dont feel like flogging another
new version right now, so thanks for your willingness to check under the hood on this one!!

I am one of the developers of the Rocket Torrents software and would hope everyone would actually download the software and give it a fair evaluation. We have worked very hard to give average user of p2p a better free file sharing software.

We are trying make it easier for users to find the most popular torrents. The most active swarms give a faster downloading experience. Why would you criticize this? Yes we offer and optional toolbar, like Frostwire who is also built of the Limewire Pro code. The software is free but we need something to help pay bandwidth and development costs. What better way than an optional toolbar.

"Your playing into newton’s hands"

p2pnet doesn't have advertisers: it has friends who rent space so they can tell readers about their products or services, and if I can help by posting items of genuine news about them, I do.

I deleted the comment because trolls only serve to take atttention away from content.

Also see http://www.p2pnet.net/story/16253

And if you want to now my thoughts on advertising, http://www.p2pnet.net/story/16878

Cheers! And thanks, Dredd

" Your playing into newton’s hands. He deleted a post which said he was writing up an advertiser without disclosing it was an advertiser. "

I don't really care.
Jon needs to be able to support his work here, an I fully support that.
In the spirit of that support I will strive to disprove negative statements against
those advertisers, when those accusations have no basis in fact.

Cheers Jon, and as I said, I'll be playing with this for about a week to see how it holds up.
Meanwhile I hope Surfer has some time to peek under the hood.

It's amusing to see quick complaints of trojans in new P2P clients.

I installed it ( haven't put it to actual use yet ).

WinXP pro Genuine.
3 ghx P4 2gb RAM.
AVG pro ( paid for ) resident shield.
SASW free version

Installation was smooth, easy to understand options to opt out of the toolbar, and other 'extras',
which I did.

It required a Java update, which it did without a problem, ans was legit,
( my Java client WAS out of date ).

NO virii or trojans.
Nothing sneaky added to startup items ( msconfig checks, HJ manual check, Registry manual check of
drivers and logon and userinit keys etc .. ).

Most quick trojan complaints some from industry folk who want to frighten people away from
using p2p clients. Also, I still have the unprovable opinion that RIAA agents are the ones seeding
most of the worst trojan infested software on the P2P networks, in order to discourage their use.

So far, after installation, this app is totally clean.
First run of the app had no surprises either.

I'll play around with it this week to see how well it performs otherwise.
It would be helpful is someone with more understanding of the protocols involved
would do a deeper examination of this, if they have time. Protocol examination is
one of my weak points, while virus, trojan, and other malware detection and
fighting is one of my VERY strong skills.

So far this software is squeaky clean.

It’s amusing to see quick complaints of trojans in new P2P clients.

I installed it ( haven’t put it to actual use yet ).

WinXP pro Genuine.
3 ghx P4 2gb RAM.
AVG pro ( paid for ) resident shield.
SASW free version

Installation was smooth, easy to understand options to opt out of the toolbar, and other ‘extras’,
which I did.

Also, I still have the unprovable opinion that RIAA agents are the ones seeding
most of the worst trojan infested software on the P2P networks, in order to discourage their use.

looks like limewire/frostwire. gets a trojan warning at install. java based, vista refuses to boot it up and close it down..good idea. wants to install a toolbar during installation. had it on for a whopping 3 minutes, got frustrated and uninstalled it, i stick to my torrents and nzb.

Sounds .. interesting.

I'll wait for Surfers take on this.
I can't imagine it's any safer than any other BT client, it just sounds
more convenient and it's not dependent on any one particular Torrent
aggregator site.
