Penn LionShare p2p code
p2pnet.net News:- Penn State University has released the open source code for its LionShare p2p project.
It’s nice to see p2p technology being used in a comprehensive sharing scenario, particularly since in this instance, it couldn’t have started without GPL’d (General Public License) code from LimeWire.
“This shows there is a place for unconstrained file sharing,” LimeWire’s Greg Bildson told p2pnet. “I’ve always been an advocate for using file sharing as a knowledge base in academic settings.”
The LionShare project, “kicked off it’s open source initiative today with the release of the LionShare ALPHA 0.4 source code,” says Penn. “The source code for the LionShare peer 0.4, sasl-ca 0.1, and peerserver 0.1 are downloadable via CVS. The released code is still under heavy development, so please keep in mind that all components are still in the alpha stage.”
“Currently, many academic digital collections remain ‘hidden’ or difficult to access on the Internet,” says an earlier Penn announcement. “Through the use of LionShare technology, users will be able to find and access these information reservoirs in a more timely and direct manner – employing one rather than multiple searches. LionShare will also provide users with tools to catalog and organize personal files for easier retrievals and enhanced sharing capabilities.”
The Gnutella network, “could and should be one of the core distribution tools on the Internet,” says the LimeWire open source project site.
“We believe in open standards, open networks, and that any global networking protocol must have an open source piece at its core if it is to remain uncorrupted. We believe that the best people to develop the Gnutella network and its applications are its users.”
Some individuals, “simply want to know how LionShare – unlike controversial file-swapping tools that can be used to illegally exchange files – offers a legitimate system for academic collaboration and file-sharing,” says another Penn page.

The Big Four record label cartel’s RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has developed an interesting partnership with Penn, using it as a marketing, sales, PR and distribution outlet for members’ music ‘product’.
LionShare funding comes from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
