INDUCE hits another snag

p2pnet.net News:- This must be giving Hollywood stalwarts Orrin Hatch and Pat Leahy ulcers.

They’re the Main Men behind the entertainment industry’s INDUCE bill, now under continuous fire from all sides of the technology industry .

Hatch is also US Senate Judiciary Committee chairman while Leahy is the ranking Democrat, but INDUCE stalled again at last Thursday’s Judiciary Committee.

It would, “put a foot on the throat of anyone coming to market with a new device, software product, or home networking system that handles copyrighted content,” said Gary Shapiro, chairman of the Home Recording Rights Coalition (HRRC).

Hatch and Leahy have been trying to eviscerate the embryo commercial p2p industry on behalf of the entertainment industry and the original bill would have done exactly that.

Hatch, et al, in particular has been using every trick he can think of to force INDUCE through but it’s now been re-hashed several times, picking up new opponents with each re-jig.

It was scheduled for a markup in last Thursday but, “While I do not contemplate action on this bill at today’s markup, negotiations will continue this afternoon to perfect language that will bring an end to the rampant abuse of copyrighted material, for example, by some file sharing programs,” Hatch is quoted as saying in an internetnews.com report, going on:

“At the same time, we must protect the rights of legitimate technology firms to develop faster and better products.”

Hatch hopes to bring the bill up again at next week’s judiciary markup, “which will likely be the committee’s last meeting before Congress adjourns for the national elections on Oct. 8,” says the story.
