Monetising Mariah: ad-packed album
p2pnet news view p2pnet news view | Advertising | Music:- Why would anyone pay good money to by a T or a cap with a maker’s name on it?
Talk about sponsored ads.
But they do.
Now, people who already pay way over what Mariah Carey’s latest is worth just by virtue of buying it will find they also bought an advertising-packed Elle magazine — whether they wanted to or not.
“As music sales continue to drop like they`re not so hot throughout the industry, Island Def Jam Music Group is jamming on a new business model: integrating brands into artists` CD booklets,” says Brandweek.
Carey and the label are both owned by the Korporate Kopyright Klan’s biggest member, France’s Vivendi Universal.
‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,’ due out next month, will feature articles such as VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life and ‘Recording Rituals, as well as items pushing Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne and the Bahamas Board of Tourism, plus other shining examples of “lifestyle advertising”.
And if punters don’t scream too loudly at being forced to sponsor Carey’s (and Vivendi Universal’s) sponsors, the KKK label is, “eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists,” the story adds.
Stay tuned.

People complain about too many ads on TV and radio and the solution is to jam them into albums?
Just how out of touch are these companies? Do they even listen or read forums or the many emails and letters they receive?
Pathetic!

Robert: “Just how out of touch are these companies?” Pretty far out I’d say, and not just recently. If you look back at the 60’s and 70’s the “contracts” they started to use to control artists are from a completely different reality. They have no desire to know or understand what you want, or like for that matter, all they really want is for you to be an obedient cash cow. Taking what they “give” you without complaint! And you are right….Pathetic!

At least when The Who sold out, you know they were doing it for fun, and making a jab at commercial radio. Mariah Carey is making us want to take a jab at HER.
Next: scented CDs.

It’s only a matter of time before the songs’ lyrics contain advertising, in much the same way that movies and TV shows feature advertised products cleverly immersed in the storyline.

My first thought was: Oh, barf, just what the world needs.
Yuck.
