Manitoba musicians shun CRIA and RIAA
p2pnet news view Politics | Music:- The government of Canada is continuing its off- and online ‘consultations’ on copyright issues through roundtables and ‘town halls` staged across the country.
The most recent event was a roundtable in Manitoba when, through the Manitoba Music Industry Association, local musicians made it crystal clear exactly what they stand for, and what they stand against.

and, blogs Michael Geist, it has to be heard.
After numerous presentations at the roundtable calling for expanded fair dealing (from education, researchers, and artists), he says, the MMIA argued »»»
We find ourselves in the Manitoba music industry more aligned with some of the creators coalitions and independent music groups and less aligned with CRIA and the RIAA.
Our members are generally speaking are not interested in anti-circumvention laws, they are not interested in suing fans.
No one from our membership is going to go out and sue fans because they copied some of their music.
What they are interested in is finding ways of monetizing the creative content.
With songwriters and many Canadian musicians, “already distancing themselves from CRIA,” it’s, “interesting to even find a provincial music industry association doing the same,” says Geist.

This is the only way the RIAA will change, and honestly i dont think they will do even that. first like the Manitoba case the musicians need to stand up for their own cases, they are the ones that are losing out in the farce. secondary, i am just worried that the Mafiaa will do a McCarthy witchhunt of those musicians once it happens.

i wan’t artist to be paid but i don’t want to pay directly ( maybe like 3$ per month that everyone has to pay if they have an internet connection ! and the download site’s/service’s may only use money gathered from the site to keep the site up and the rest of it must go to artist and of course the 2$ to! i love content and file-sharing!)

I would have never thought of Manitoba as a music recording Mecca.

If not dumping the RIAA, I would at least like to see some of the bigger name acts with more pull come contract re-negotiation insist on this line, or something like it added to the contract. You(the riaa) or any affiliate organizations, law firms, ect, shall NOT use our name, or any of our songs, in any lawsuits that you bring against our fans for filesharing our music on any network or forum.
A new band would not have the clout to demand this in a contract, but some of the established acts do.
