Google launches book search

p2pnet.net News:- The Frankfurt Book Fair is the place for news centering on the international book business and the big news this year is Google’s statement that it’s launched a search service designed to let users find book extracts together with normal searches.

Is this a challenge to Amazon? It’s more likely to be the continuance of an existing relationship.

Excerpts found on Google Print will carry a link to allow consumers to buy the book “from a range of online book retailers,” says the Digital Bulletin.

Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were on hand at the fair to announce Google Print, as they’re calling the service, but Marcel van Leeuwen, ceo of Germany’s YEALD, ‘The Challenging Investor Journal,’ believes this could be the start of something Big.

“Fenced-off marketplaces like eBay will gradually be stripped naked,” he says.

And it isn’t just Google.

“Today it is books,” he goes on. “But the more interesting question is why Google (or any other search engine) in future would forego such delicacies as cars, printer refills or consumer credit.”

Google is sitting at the top of the buying chain, says van Leeuwen.

And, “this Google initiative demonstrates how valuable A9 user profiling will be in future. For if A9 (or one day Google) processes a user search, it would be very handy to understand what else this user is interested in.”

Remember way back when Microsoft was still a disc with DOS and Bill Gates was just a cool young guy from Seattle who’d dropped out of Harvard to chase neat ideas?
