Dredd tells it like it really is
p2pnet news view P2P:- An unidentified Stephen Harper fanboy (or girl
) couldn’t resist the perceived opportunity offered in yesterday’s US government backs $1.92M Thomas verdict.
In it, I said if Canada isn’t careful, under George W. Harper’s leadership, Canadians might soon find themselves hammered by the same kind of Hollywood and Big Music attacks Americans now have to suffer as routine.
“Jon, this is exaggerated and over-blown,” said a Reader’s Write. ‘”These are companies that are doing no more than other companies which are trying to maintain a foothold in a marketplace which is degenerating because of the activities of a small number of people who do not believe in paying for value received.”
Said another from, probably, the same person, “Your posts have always been ill-informed, but now they are becoming dangerous. The Harper Government is doing everything it can to develop fair and just copyright regulations, as it is proving with its online Copyright Consultations ( http://copyright.econsultation.ca/ ) which, to remind you, even you have written about.
“This kind of unreasoned editorial serves no one and nothing. Instead, it takes attention away from genuine efforts in both America and Canada to bring intellectual property and copyright matters into this century. Please do yourself and your readers a service by confining yourself to the few subjects and topics which you are qualified address and if you cannot do that, it is time for you to retire and take P2Pnet offline.”
Dreddsnik has been a staunch p2pnet supporter for years, and the last shill item provoked him to post what has to be one of the best summaries of the way things really are in the scary (for the Korporate Kopyright Kartels) transition of mindless cash cow consumers to customers with free will and freedom of choice, and a determination to apply both.

“… companies which are trying to maintain a foothold in a marketplace which is degenerating because of the activities of a small number of people who do not believe in paying for value received.”
First off, Movie revenues are off the charts, while at the same time those same movies are the most downloaded.
No degeneration of revenue here.
Second, several independent studies have proved that file sharing has no impact on recorded music sales.
AllofMP3 proved that people will pay for music at a reasonable rate and without DRM. Instead of embracing it, it was shut down for showing an embarassing truth.
Third, the RIAA members have plenty of money to throw at extremely expensive lawyers, and giving their own executives a LOT of cash, while `forgetting’ how to contact the artists that they owe money.
If the labels were really losing that much they already would have gone under, since the file sharing phenomenon has been around well before Napster brought it into the light. Claiming that file [sharing] is the sole and most major reason the labels may be losing some steam is at best, intellectually dishonest propaganda, at worst, an outright lie.
Fourth, taking the software industry as an example, The photo manipulating app PhotoShop has been around almost as long as 486 computers. It is now and has always been one of the most bootlegged apps in internet history, and yet it is still around and still being developed. If all that downloading was really that destructive this app wold have disappeared into the pit of history a long time ago.
“small number of people who do not believe in paying for value received.”
This is another propaganda statement. We ALL believe in paying for Value received.
We don’t believe in being given a false perception of that value, only to find that it was not as portrayed,(the CD or movie is actually crap ), and not being able to get our due return (money back for a dissatisfied CUSTOMER ).
There is plenty of evidence that if there is real value, it does get paid for.
That is the truth hidden under the lies the likes of you spout day in and day out, until the Goebbels principle kicks in and makes the lie seem the truth and the truth seem the lie.
Excellent, Dredd. Thanks.

“This is another propaganda statement. We ALL believe in paying for Value received.”
I think Dredd is being too idealistic here. There is a whole culture out there who wouldn’t pay even if they had the excessive funds to do so, and it is more prevalent than many think.
Not saying it’s a bad post, just injecting a little reason. The rest is quite good.

” I think Dredd is being too idealistic here. There is a whole culture out there who wouldnât pay even if they had the excessive funds to do so, and it is more prevalent than many think. ”
I think it’s less prevalent than you think, especially when it comes to Artists and Fans.
For other things, you may be correct.
But, oddly enough, the ones who wouldn’t pay are MORE likely to be the ones that have enough.
I see a strange ass-backwards habit here in america, but I don’t think it’s strictly an american phenom.
Notice how hotels, Airlines, and businesses large and small bend over backwards to give
free shit to the wealthy patrons to keep THEM happy.
The ones that can afford it the most, are GIVEN the most.
This then turns into a sense of entitlement.
That’s why the people who say ‘You can’t get something for nothing’ are
usually the most privileged in our society.
It’s bizarre as hell.

Jon, I wouldn’t call the recording and movie industry, the RIAA, MPAA and others Korporate Kopywrong Kartel. Obviously this reminds in some way the KKK, and I think it’s somewhat misappropriate (since there are questions related to racism involved, even indirectly) But these organizations really behave like a… mafiaa

“I wouldnât call the recording and movie industry, the RIAA, MPAA and others Korporate Kopywrong Kartel.”
You’re correct, and I’ll stop. SOBs they may be, but racists they’re not.
According to them, everyone who shares music online is a thieving criminal, irrespective of colour or creed.
Cheers!

There’s nothing inappropriate about using a “KKK”-style of nickname here.
Both the original KKK and Big Media demonstrate their own styles of oppression and public propaganda, as well as the same level of intelligence.
Just because one of them was racially-based doesn’t mean that you can’t make inference to the initials.
Doing so is a necessary form of “reclamation” that needs to be performed from time to time, similar to the way today’s blacks have “reclaimed” the “N” word.

Tinfoil:
Okay, I’ll play along: we DON’T want to have to pay:
Here’s what I mean:
1. We like the idea of a “public domain” — information and, yes, even cultural “product” like songs and stories and suchlike being available without having to bribe the gatekeepers — corporations which have successfully turned a MERE 7 year monopoly privilege into a ‘fundamental right’ lasting nearly a century past the “rights-holder’s” death. To SOME of us, paying corporate scumbags for stuff that SHOULD have entered the public domain, is idiotic.
2. We also don’t like paying corporations that screw over their OWN employees: read up on some of the stuff about the royalties and collection agencies and such, and you might learn something.
3. We also don’t like financing frivolous lawsuits, thank you very much.
This reflexive notion that when you pay the RIAA member corporations’ various extortion fees, you’re paying for “value received” just doesn’t jibe with the facts.
Copy’right’ terms should never have been extended. In a real sense, every copy’right’ term extension ROBS the public domain, so as to allow corporate weasels to keep milking cultural ‘product’ that in many cases they didn’t even produce.
So stop trying to play the “pirates just don’t want to play” card, because it cuts both ways: the corporate media oligarchy doesn’t seem very eager to ‘pay’ their side of the copyright bargain, by allowing stuff to enter the public domain as originally intended.
(Personally, I’d rather see every RIAA member corporation bankrupt, so they can’t keep doing bullshit like they did to Jammie and Joel, but then again, I’m probably some kind of subversive commie-type person, because I think it sucks to have to abandon towns because corporations considered the cleanup-effort a mere ‘externality’ for somebody else to fix.)
Just a tip: in the future, when you try to “inject reason” into a discussion, don’t just parrot RIAA talking points.

The guy finally gets pissed about Apple’s anti-competitive practices, shoots and burns his new iPhone 3GS, posts video on Youtube

iPhone 3GS Shot with 9mm and Burned
I have bought all three generations of iPhones on launch day, but I cannot take it any longer.
In the end, it was rejection of Google Voice from the App Store that drove me to this point, but that was just the tip of the spear. Whether it is their refusal to let other gadgets such as the Palm Pre interface with iTunes, or their Draconian App Store procedures…I simply cannot support them with a clear conscience, which is why I chose to end the life of my iPhone in this manner instead of selling it–after all, who would want to pass on a cancer to another person?
Apple may have fooled the world with their witty commercials and bright t-shirts, but they will no longer fool me. Their approach has helped them gain a sizable chunk of the PC market, but as their popularity grows, people will begin to see them for what they really are–a corporation far more “evil” than Microsoft would ever dream to be.
Apple is turning consumerism into communism. Any entity that enforces such anti-competitive practices and dictates what their paying population can and cannot have without any explanation, consistency, or reason is communistic. It’s wrong and I will no longer support it.

Jon, here is another tip for you:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22873968-Call-to-action-Petition-to-dissolve-the-CRTC
In the past few days I’ve created a new website (dissolvethecrtc.ca) I’m hoping to turn it into a bit of a community to gain feedback and inform the public of the actions of the CRTC but I’ve also created a petition. Please sign it at your convenience: »
Provided I get at least 10,000 signatures and if I can arrange something I’m prepared to hand deliver it otherwise I will send it in via postal mail. I’m aiming for 500,000 but that’s being optimistic at this point.
Also feel free to message me if I made any errors in the petition letter or if you have any ideas on what to add.
August 17th, 2009 at 2:21 am
And here is the link to sign the “Dissolve the CRTC” petition:
http://dissolvethecrtc.ca/node/1
Sign it and tell your friends.

Re: DissolveTheCRTC.ca…
Wow!
In the 2 minutes it took me to sign and confirm, the counter added about 10 signatures!
Refreshed the page, and 4 more were added.
This thing could take off!
But, will anyone in the Government even read it before putting it the “circular filing cabinet”?
