iTunes owns 25% of music market: hype

p2pnet news view Music:- Research company NPD  is doing a wonderful PR job as an Apple hypnotist, claiming iTunes has 25% of the overall music market, physical and digital both, in the U.S.

In 2005, NPD’s Russ Crupnick (right) said iTunes was on an equal footing with LimeWire.

This was when LimeWire was one of the top P2P file sharing applications.

But there was absolutely no way this wild claim could have been anywhere near accurate.  iTunes didn’t then, and doesn’t now, figure in the overall online music scene where Light Nets, sneakernets, the P2P networks, and all the other means of sharing, continue to rule.

But, According to information from NPD`s MusicWatch Digital service, Apple iTunes`s industry-leading a-la-carte download store tied with LimeWire as the second-most-popular digital music service in March, 2005, said MacDailyNews in 2005, quoting NPD. Both iTunes and LimeWire were used by 1.7 million households.

Is this possible? – p2pnet asked LimeWire coo Greg Bildson.

I wonder at the source for their numbers, he told us. I mean we get 6,000,000 or more downloads a month so we`ve got to assume that we`re in more than 1.7 million households. I don`t think iTunes is getting six million downloads a month on the software itself.

And is iTunes really all it’s cracked up to be?

Now, “iTunes-purchased songs now account for 25 percent of the overall music market — both physical and digital — in the U.S., says an NPD Group report,” according to CNet News, its headline echoing the claim as an outright statement.

Stay tuned.
