IndyMedia servers returned

p2pnet.net News View:- The two Independent Media Center (IMC) servers seized by the US government last Thursday have been returned, says the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation)

But the servers, which host Indymedia’s Net radio station and more than 20 Indymedia websites, won’t be back online until the EFF has examined them to make sure they’re “secure” and to allow the foundation to, “take steps to preserve evidence for future legal action”.

Yesterday, the EFF said it was repesenting Indymedia in its efforts to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Now that the servers have been returned, the question still remains: who took them, and under what authority?

Rackspace Managed Hosting, the Texas company that managed the servers for Indymedia, wouldn’t comment, citing a gag order.

“All that is known at this point is that the subpoena that resulted in the seizure was issued at the request of a foreign government, most likely with the assistance of the United States Attorney’s Office in San Antonio,” says the EFF in a statement.

“Although initial reports suggested that the FBI had taken the servers, the FBI has now denied any involvement.”

However, “An FBI spokesperson, Joe Parris, confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the FBI issued a subpoena to the provider who hosted the Indymedia servers in the U.K., but that it was ‘on behalf of a third country‘,” said Indymedia.

The EFF says it plans to take legal action to find out what happened to Indymedia’s servers.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

For the US government to shut down websites and raid the host’s servers is getting to be increasingly common. Sometimes they even steal the domain.

Any independent news site that fails to toe the line gets watched, and those that espouse especially anti-establishment views even more so.

Lets hope that p2Pnet’s servers are not located in the USA.

    They’re not ; )
