Twitter wants to trademark ‘tweet’

p2pnet news view | Advertising:- Would you agree the word “tweet” should be owned by Twitter?

Didn’t think so.

Nor did America’s trademark authorities.

Twitter asked the US patent and trademark office for exclusive rights to the word, “but the request was provisionally denied on the grounds that other companies had filed for trademarks of very similar words,” says The Guardian, citing TweetMarks, Cotweet and Tweetphoto.

There was a, “likelihood of confusion” between the various marks, it ruled, says the story, adding:

“The ruling is a setback to Twitter’s co-founder Biz Stone, who is keen to protect the rapidly growing language surrounding the service.”

If he eventually has his way with tweet, do you reckon he’ll come after p2pnet for our little Twitter animation?

;)

Stay tuned.

I want to trademark “piss”. I do it every day, and use the word constantly, so why not?

  2. Robert Says:

I’d like to trademark “twit” because that’s what you’d call someone so obsessed they feel they have to patent/copyright/trademark everything to remain in business.

  3. kylekatarn Says:

Trademarks and patents are so idiotic… It’s a stupid rush to patent and protect everything… Like #1, maybe someone should trademark “piss”, because we do it every day. Do it before someone else has the idea….

  4. Natanael L Says:

I want to trademark “Swede”. ‘Cus I am one. :)

  5. Devil's Advocate Says:

    @Robert:

    Nice one!
    LMFAO!!

  6. I Will Charge You A Fee For Farting Says:

Twitter wants to trademark ‘tweet’? I want to Trade Mark the word “Fart” so I can charge 25% Royalty (US$225) to the 6.8 Billion people living on earth everytime they Fart and says the word Fart. I might even charge 25% Royalty (US$225) fee to the Farmers who breed Cows and Horses because those animals are part responsible for Global Warming.
