BC ‘bad apples’ blacklist

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- There’s, “no reason to have this type of system in place to begin with,” said a Reader’s Write to the p2pnet story saying some bars in British Columbia were still collecting personal information as part of the Bar Watch program, despite the fact British Columbia`s Privacy Commissioner had told them not to.

“Doesn’t this violate your rights?” – wondered the comment post, going on, “I mean you want to go into a public establishment yet they must take private information from you in order to enter. For starters people who own bars are sketchy people to begin with so how can they be trusted with Drivers license numbers and info etc? Who knows they can sell it and next thing we know our identity has been stolen.”

Now privacy commissioner David Loukidelis says the system, “made by TreoScope to collect and store customers’ names, photos, birthdates, genders and driver’s licence numbers,” can stay in bars and clubs, “providing it does not retain the driver’s licence numbers, and erases data within 24 hours after it’s collected,” says the Vancouver Sun.

But, “If a person is determined within 24 hours of having his/her license scanned, to be violent or otherwise undesirable from a safety perspective, their information can be kept and shared with other bars using TreoScope`s software,” says Vancouver Island’s Nanaimo News Bulletin.

This means only information necessary to identify the bad apples will be kept and that`s good for all other bar customers, said Loukidelis.

Oh. So that’s OK, then.

BC will have a blacklist of people designated by bar-owners as being undesirable.

And it’ll be passed along.

Stay tuned.

Jon, I am a loyal reader of P2PNet but with great respect I don’t think bar problems British Colombia may have are of great interest to readers.

Not to sound rude RW but I do find that of interest because it has to do with privacy rights!

As a result of P2PNet.net’s articles on this subject, I will NOT be visiting any clubs or bars in Vancouver that support this ridiculous program. Clearly the owners were sold a product they didn’t need, which happens when you are baffled with bullshit. Sorta like Congress when the **AA groups speak.

Undesirables can be removed the same way they always have, via no-neck low-IQ bouncers who have major issues with themselves and take it out on others in the form of desire-to-fight. Not all bouncers are like this, I’ve met a few who are intelligent and actually know how to watch people and peacefully remove them without incident. However, that’s not exciting to the highschool wrestling guy who almost failed, loves Roadhouse, and couldn’t make it in the VPD as a cop because he couldn’t shoot anyone on the street at will (clearly he would have to say ‘they were combative and not responding to my commands’ and those are too many syllables for some).

Having a database of undesirables is useless considering the networking that already exists amongst bar security personnel, they all know who’s a trouble-maker, but what they don’t know is who is normal and appears a trouble-maker simply because some beefhead without a brain provoked them beyond restraint, just to satisfy their small-penis-aggression issues.

And having a database means abuse of the system with personal information being sold.

However, hopefully patrons will be smart and ask first if they have such a system and the bars that do can be avoided. When they see what this does, they’ll reconsider their stupid investment. And the citizens of Vancouver should wake up and write to their city counselmen/women and MP’s and express their concerns. They complain about the homeless, why not complain about this too, at least this is an actual thing to complain about, as it has actual serious ramifications for the citizens (unlike the homeless, which is really just arrogant, ignorant NIMBY mentality).

    /end today’s rant.

    @ RW:

It’s British Columbia, not British Colombia. :)

But look at it like this: p2pnet (not P2PNet :) ) is like a local newspaper which also carries international news. I’m on Vancouver Island and a little later today, I’ll be doing another VI story, this time on CHEK TV.

People who aren’t interested in what’s happening around here (but which could easily be echoed much further afield) are free to move on to something which does interest them. And I don’t mean that unpleasantly.

UPDATE:- As promised, CHEK-TV closure looms

    Cheers!

What happens there will be mimicked around Canada.

The Privacy Commissioner just allowed the wholesale selling of peoples information.

It’s not like the privacy commissioner audits anyone.

Its not like the privacy commissioner has any teeth to fine anyone.
