p2pnet.net News:- Starting this holiday season, Canadian gamers will have to prove they’re 17 or older before they’ll be allowed to rent or buy certain computer and video games.
The decision was adversely inspired by the popularity of Rockstar Games’ Manhunt, completely banned in New Zealand.
Now, retailers and the computer and video game industry have launched a countrywide "Commitment to Parents" plan to, "help parents ensure the games they buy for their children are appropriate for their households," say the Retail Council of Canada (RCC), the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESA Canada) and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).
"Since the release of Manhunt, there has been increasing pressure for governments in Canada to become more involved in creating legislation that restricts the sale of mature video games to minors, much in the same way it handles movies," says the RCC’s Retailer magazine.
"Despite voluntary ratings and store policies, one of the most popular video games among children in Grades 3 to 6 is Grand Theft Auto, a violent action game rated for age 17-plus, according to a survey for the Canadian Teachers’ Federation," says Metro.
"However, the retail industry is responding with its own measures to self-regulate."
Retailers taking part in the program have agreed not to sell or rent "M"- rated (Mature) games to customers under the age of 17, or games rated "AO" (Adults Only) to customers under the age of 18.
Firms taking part include Hudson’s Bay Company retail outlets the Bay and Zellers, Best Buy, Blockbuster Canada, EB Games, Future Shop, RadioShack, Rogers Video, Toys ‘R’ Us and Wal-Mart.

How will this work?
Most kids will get their parents or older people to buy and rent their games.
Most parents are sane enough to realize if their kids are normal that violence isnt connected to video games.

I think it’s good. With the advent of 24 hour cable/network news, my kids not only get inundated with cartoons, but they also get to see murders, terror attacks and other forms of violence at all times of the day, every time we flick channels.
Short of cutting the cable, wtf can a parent do? Not change channels?
Blocking younger kids from role-playing these games is a good thing. I’ve known many adults who got way to “into” these games. Less violence is a good thing, IMHO.

I agree, it won’t do much.
Kids who really want to drink beer or smoke get someone older
to buy these for them, same for games except it won’t be illegal,
so there’s less reason not to do it.
Not to mention that kids do not have much money to spend
and so may be more susceptible to download games instead of buying them if it’s difficult.
Or to share games with friends once one has it.
