US robo ‘Don’t call’ list full of holes
p2pnet news view | Advertising:- When Canada’s farcical do-not-call anti-telemarketeers list first went up it was described as, well, farcical.
And when, after more than a year of continuing complaints the CRTC, which is in charge of the project, finally nailed two offenders, it did its utmost to keep their identities secret.
Yesterday, they were identified.
Now, in the US, the Federal Trade Commission says beginning September 1, prerecorded commercial telemarketing calls will be prohibited, “unless the telemarketer has obtained permission in writing from consumers who want to receive such calls,” says News3.

Offenders could be fined up to $16,000 per call.
However, as with the Canadian version, the American ‘If you’re a robot, don’t call’ list is full of gaping holes which’ll be quickly exploited by telemarketeers.
Purely informational recorded messages will be OK as long as they don’t try to, “interest consumers in the sale of any goods or services”.
Also exempt will be “certain healthcare messages” and calls from politicians, banks, telephone carriers, and most charitable organizations.
No need to stay tuned.
