Ottawa yanks online debtors list
p2pnet news view P2P:- The names of companies and people who owe the city of Ottawa money have been hurriedly yanked from its website after accidentally being posted for all to see.
“Now city officials must scramble over the next two days to notify the 19 companies and 376 individuals involved in the privacy breach as required under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act,” says the Ottawa Citizen, going on:
“The agenda for the corporate services committee for Aug. 31 was posted earlier in the week, then disappeared off the city’s site in the afternoon. A complaint had been lodged with the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner. City privacy office officials were contacted at 2:45 p.m. and they contacted the city clerk’s office, which pulled the information off the Web site.”
The agenda, “included a report about $209,000 the city is writing off, having unsuccessfully tried to get the funds through collection agencies,” says the story, going on:
“Such reports are provided annually to council. Attached was a list marked ‘confidential’ that provided the name, customer number and the amount owing from each person or company.”
The list includes the first letter of the person’s name and the last name, or the name of the company, says the Ottawa Citizen.
