Famous emails archive
p2pnet.net News:- Some historians fear the proliferation of emails might ultimately result in the loss of valuable data.
Consequently, the British Library plans to archive the emails of British authors and scientists alongside its existing collection of paper correspondence.
“The library has appointed the world’s first digital manuscripts curator to collect important material that would otherwise end up as deleted items,” says Australian IT.
The library has has created a list of “important people” such as Stephen Hawking.
Now, Jeremy John, who set up the library’s first digital archive, “is appealing to writers and scientists to ask them to store their correspondence in a way that will allow future generations to see their work,” says the story.
Digital material will be archived in a climate-controlled room behind metal doors to prevent magnetic data from being erased, and files will be duplicated on CDs and hard drives.
“John is now approaching artists and scientists to ask them to donate their emails,” says Australian IT, adding some authors have already donated their emails, but have insisted that their names be kept confidential until their deaths “so as not to upset their friends and correspondents”.
So now you know what to do with all those emails you’ve been trashing.
Send them to the British Library instead.
