Music from space ready for lift-off! (Literally.)

p2pnet news view Cool | P2P | Music:- “So, I’m going to officially announce ‘Project Calliope’, the music satellite,” said Sandy Antunes in an email, yesterday.

Thanks to Steve Tunbridge, we’d heard about his Project Calliope a little while back.

At the time, Sandy wasn’t ready to go public. But, “I’m going to launch a satellite!” – he posts on ScientificBlogging today.  “I’m a bit nervous, but I finally committed. ProjectCalliope.com.  Next week we officially announce!”

Now he’s looking for someone with $4,000 available.

‘Project Calliope’ is a satellite being launched by a group of space & music enthusiasts on the  “TubeSat” platform (http://tinyurl.com/skycall).

It’ll be an ionospheric detector transmitting sonifiable data back to Earth for web streaming and remixing.

Conceptually, it’s a musical instrument in space, played by space rather than just after-the-fact sonified.  We like the idea of flying something in space whose purpose is to make music until it dies — music from science.

We are in early development and have secured a media partner and (counting our personal contributions) two thirds of our funding.  We are looking for a music co-sponsor to cover half the launch costs ($4K).  Contact Alex at antunes @ nasw dot org for inquiries.

You can follow us on twitter @skyday and from our regular blog ‘Satellite Diaries’ on ScientificBlogging, which debuts Monday.  We’ll give you the inside look of how absolutely anyone can launch their own personal satellite (PS), step by step.

“Stay tuned to this channel!” Steve adds.

We will.
