Taking 1p2U for a drive
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- Recently, in a p2pnet post on the The Pirate Bay saga, which is rapidly turning into The Pirate Bay farce, I referred to the 1p2U (one penny to you) micro-payments programme Crosbie Fitch has been grafting away at, going on:
“He`s been on it for quite a while and I asked him how it`s going.”
’1p2U is in what is known as `live alpha`, he said. ‘That means it hasn`t been “launched” to great fanfare, but it can start being tested by those willing to put up with a few bugs, glitches, sluggishness and certain features missing.
“More information is available at 1p2u.com (for bloggers as well as those who think some of them write articles worth paying a penny for)’.
Take it for a drive, he suggested.
So that’s what I’m doing.
See the 1p Subscribe button below?
Click here, or click the button, to find out what it’s all about.
And of coure, this is 1P in the UK. But at current rates, it’d be 1.8 cents Canadian, or 1.63 US.
A coming enhancement wil include:
a) 1p per article (uncapped)
b) hourly maximum average publication rate (max 24p per day)
c) daily maximum average publication rate (max £3.65 per annum).
d) weekly maximum average publication rate (max 52p per annum).
e) monthly maximum average publication rate (max 12p per annum).
“At this stage only, the really keen alpha testers are expected to subscribe,” says Crosbie.
Cheers!

Hey, Jon. I enjoy reading your blog, I’ll happily test-drive Crosbie’s micro-payment subscription system by subscribing to you.
flagg1209 is generally how I’m known online, in case you’re wondering where all those pennies are coming from

Thanks, David. Crosbie and I are both more than just a bit interested to see how this goes.
Cheers!

I must admit I had hoped to start off with a couple of small time bloggers like myself. Jon’s prodigious output and large audience was not what I’d expected to test 1p2U out on. But, we’ll see how it goes. :-}

This sounds like such a great idea, but I’d really like to see a bit more information on how one might send the money. Were I to use such a system, I’d want to avoid the fee-heavy PayPal like the plague. It sounds like 1p2u will actually handle the money transfer – is this true?

@ Crosbie
Don’t worry, m8. You’re innovating where others plod. That’s always nerve-wracking.
Cheers!

At the moment the payment deposit/withdrawal features are disabled until I’m confident the system’s sufficiently tested. One has to be very careful when money is concerned.
Money entering/exiting the system will be subject to any payment handler’s fees, e.g. 20p+3%. That means you may as well wait until your dues mount up to say £10, so you only pay 50p in fees. That gives you a thousand pennies to play with (no commission). Similarly, withdrawal may also be subject to fees, e.g. the cost of posting a cheque, etc. So, even with the payment handler’s fees (which are pretty much unavoidable), it should be possible to get fairly close to ‘a penny’=1p.
I intend to support multiple payment handlers so one can hope they’ll compete to reduce their handling fees.

@Crosbie: Let me know if you need help adding this to facebook
You might even be able to get the facebook payments API to support something people can feel more comfortable with. Also, if your in canada, look into moneris (moneris.com/ca or any BMO bank will have some info for ya), they are a DEBIT (anyone with online banking
, see empiretheatres.com ticket sales for more info) and credit card payment handler, with minimal fees.

@Crosbie: I should probably mention, that to add this to a facebook app, i wouldent charge anything. Just something somewhere that mentions my “companys” name

@Adam, I’ll be making the source to 1p2U downloadable in due course in case you fancy having a look.
However, my payments system is an adjunct to the Contingency Market (1p2U is just an app) and has been designed to support any number of payment handlers, so it should be fairly straightforward. If I get round to facebook or moneris, I’ll bear your offer of help in mind. Ta.
