Speeding pigeon beats SA’s Telkom
p2pnet news view P2P:- How embarrassing.
In a speed trial, South Africa’s Unlimited IT sent Winston, a homing pigeon, against the country’s biggest web firm, Telkom.
And Winston won.
He flew from Howick (outside Pietermaritzburg) to Hillcrest (outside Durban) on Wednesday morning, “to prove that he is faster at transferring 4GB of data than a landline,” says IntegralWebSolutions, from whence came the pic on the right.
“With the unholy level of broad band, well actual very little and expensive broad band, we have in South Africa, this might just be a no brainer for the pigeon,” says the story, posted before Winston had set off.
Well, ” the result is in, and the pigeon won hands down,” says a follow-up, adding »»»
Winston, the homing pigeon, has made history by beating a Telkom ADSL line in delivering 4GB of data from Howick to Hillcrest, outside Durban in just 2 hours 6 minutes and 57 seconds, whereas the ADSL download was “still just under four percent complete” at 11:45.
Winston easily beat the ADSL line, despite giving it a 26 minute head start, while stretching his wings and waiting for the company data to be downloaded onto the memory card.
What did Telkom have to say?
It, “could not be blamed for slow broadband services at the Durban-based company,” the BBC has it saying.
“Several recommendations have, in the past, been made to the customer but none of these have, to date, been accepted,” Telkom’s Troy Hector told South Africa’s Sapa news age.
