S. Korea to deputise online ‘cyber sheriffs’
p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- South Korea is deputising 3,000 ‘cyber sheriffs’ to, “fight cyberterrorism,” says Yonhap News.
“In early July, as many as 26 major government and private-sector Web sites, including the presidential office, the Ministry of National Defense, the National Assembly and Shinhan Bank, went down or had access problems due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks,” says the story.
Cyber sheriffs are, “trained experts capable of maintaining cyber security for businesses from cyber attacks and malicious hackers,” says the Korea Herald. “The government plans to encourage colleges to open intensive courses to train cyber experts. Graduates of the courses will be hired by government offices and businesses in the future, officials said.”
According to the plan, “the National Intelligence Service is to take a leading role when cyber attacks are launched. They will cooperate with other government offices and businesses to minimize damage from the possible “cyber terrorists.”
Separately, the Defense Ministry is to form an army unit to fight against cyber attacks by another country’s military, says the story, adding:
“The Korea Communications Commission plans a nation-wide publicitcampaign on cyber terrorism.”
Some intelligence sources, “in Korea and the United States, including Korea`s National Intelligence Service,” claimed North Korea was behind the DDoS attacks, but, “investigators were not able to determine the exact identity of the attackers,” says Joong Ang Daily.
“Computer security experts in the United States say dozens of U.S. government websites have been targeted in a coordinated cyberattack that also has struck key websites in South Korea since July 4-5,” said Radio Free Europe, adding:
“The so-called denial-of-service (DOS) attacks are being called the most widespread cyberoffensive in recent years. They began on July 4 when 14 major websites in the United States were targeted — including those of the White House, the U.S. State Department, and the New York Stock Exchange.”
