Big 4 labels back EU ‘anti-piracy’ plans

p2pnet news view Politics | Music:- If Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music’s IFPI backs something, you can rest assured sooner or later, it’ll bode ill for music lovers, particularly those who believe music should be shared.

The European Commission today outlined what it’s calling “practical, non-legislative measures to combat counterfeiting and piracy”.

Paradoxically, almost, and with an alacrity suggesting foreknowledge, the IFPI (International Federation of Phornographic Industry) praises the proposals as “practical and sensible”.

We say ‘paradoxically’ because darkly in the background is Britain’s determination to force the corporate copyright industry’s Three Strikes anti-P2P, anti-file sharing, anti-consumer programme down the throats of the electorate

And yet commissioner Charlie McCreevy (right) isn’ t suggesting more legislation is needed. Rather, he’s recommending,  “mobilizing stronger collaboration helping us to fight back”.

Measures proposed, “aim to support enforcement through a new EU observatory on counterfeiting and piracy which will bring together national representatives, private sector experts and consumers to work to collect data on and analyze the scope and scale of the problem,” he says, going on »»»

They will also foster administrative cooperation across Europe by developing coordination to ensure that more effective exchanges of information and mutual assistance can take place.

Stakeholders will be invited to build coalitions to overcome conflicts and disputes by developing collaborative voluntary arrangements that focus on concrete problems.

“The EU is home to some of most successful businesses in the world who consider intellectual property rights to be amongst their most precious commercial possessions,” McCreevy adds.
