P2P Power: Cohen does BitTorrent live streaming
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- As the creator of the (in)famous BitTorrent protocol, Bram Cohen has already changed the Net and, by default, the world once.
Can he change it again?
He believes he can —-
—- with, “a piece of code that is superior to all the other P2P-based streaming solutions on the market today”.
With online streaming, punters get to see/hear product. It’s there and then it’s gone, and contents owners can theoretically control it, ‘control’ being what it’s all about.
Now, “I’m implementing p2p live streaming,” Cohen tell us.
And interestingly, he’s chosen micro-blogging as his mode of communication and on it he tweets »»»
.@self tribler’s live streaming benchmarks are a joke. I’m going for <5sec delay
And a little later »»»
When I say tribler’s live streaming latency is a joke, I mean the highly technical definition of ‘joke’.
The tweets are from Cohen, and the first quote is from a TorrentFreak post which also has him saying, “I think there`s a very large market for live [streaming] in general, and to date no one has proven that a p2p solution can meet the real-world requirements for being an acceptable live solution.
“I intend on changing that.
“Doing live properly is a hard problem, and while I could have a working thing relatively quickly, I`m doing everything the `right` way.”
Bottom line?
“Quite a few ISPs are complaining bitterly about the strain BitTorrent puts on their network, so they will be delighted to hear that they are not being ignored in the development process,” says TorrentFreak, adding:
“If done right, BitTorrent-powered live streams may accelerate the availability of live streams on the Internet.
And then the crunch:
“Not only will existing broadcasters be able to stream their content at low costs, individual users will also be able to stream a live feed to tens of thousands of Internet users from their home connection without having to invest in bandwidth. More than ever the public will be in charge of distribution … ”

Why would I give away the bandwidth I paid for to big media cartels which would use it to spread their DRM infested content?

@RW:
Don’t stream big label DRM infested content. Stream independent films and music! Share good stuff, regardless of copy’right’ claims, share the good stuff. Most big label stuff sounds the same anyhow, get one and you’ve covered at least 5 other popular bands.

the same reason you would share DRM infested content in your torrent client.
We will most likely be able to control wich streams we share and wich we don’t.
