p2pnet hardware problems …
Hi all:
This is to say I’m having major hardware problems (this isn’t from my own computer) which may mean there’ll be no posts today.
Anyway, one way or another I’ll be back posting as soon as I can manage it.
For now, I’m trying a couple of help forums
Description of my problem is below, if anyone has any ideas —-
My Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop fan starts, stops, and the system won’t boot. The power light goes on and then off when the fan stops. I tried it without the battery. Same thing.
Cheers! And thanks …

I’m still looking for a solution and found a Lenovo power re-set >>
1. First unplug the AC adapter.
2. Next remove the battery.
3. Then press the power button 11 times, and hold it for 30 seconds on the 11th time
4. Finally plug the AC back in.
I did as suggested and something happened, but not what I was hoping for. Now nothing happens: there’s no power at all — no lights. Nothing.

The HDD and the CD/DVD drive are easy to remove.
Pop them out and turn it on.
If it boots and stays powered on, turn off, replace on item, turn on again until it fails,
then you will know if a drive is the problem and which drive is the problem.
If these steps change nothing, check the memory modules .. remove and resocket them.. they may
have worked loose.
A dead CMOS battery is a possibility as well.
Occams razor suggests a weak fan and overheating.

By way of an update, to Dredd, the CD/DVD drive is integral to the unit – not pop-outable. Otherwise, for reasons unknown to me, power has partially returned, meaning I’m back at square one — laptop fan starts, stops, and the system wonât boot. The power light goes on and then off when the fan stops. Without the battery, same, except it’s on and off in a fraction of a second, presumably because the battery is out of the circuit.
Cheers!

People who saw Frank Roberts hawking his bootleg copies of movies or music outside local beauty shops and nightclubs often called him âThe CD Man.â
Although the one-man business was not strictly legal, and recently earned him a short stretch in the Harris County Jail, family members said it was a major improvement over the narcotics that Roberts, 33, had sold in the past.
âHe was having problems getting a job,â said his half-brother, Gerald Dickey. âHe had been frustrated.â
Roberts was fatally shot about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 30 in a darkened parking lot across the street from an after-hours nightclub in the 1700 block of Webster.

“Dreddsnik Says: A dead CMOS battery is a possibility as well.”
this is what i would go to first as well… your system isnt POSTing but its PSU works… thats why it comes on them promptly goes off…. in laptops the cmos battery is /another/ battery seperate from the main one usually hidden away near the ram or other screw covered area (you’ll need to look at lenovos site for its location if you cant find it) … they can be either coin cells like a desktop system or mini rechargable NiCd or NiMH packs.. remove it and let the system set for a few hours… then with both the cmos and main batteries still disconnected try to start it… it wont know what time it is if it works and any BIOS settings you may have changed will need to be set again.. and of course you will need a new CMOS battery….
barring loose ram or other ’simple’ problems it could be that something serious has fried;
the inverter board could be bad causing a hard power drain when the backlight would normally kick on (do you see the screen try to ‘light up’ when the system tries to start?) and causing it to shut back down… thats a repair that needs to be done in a shop… (if you are of the screwdriver weilding geek variety and know where and what that board is you can disconnect it to test that theory)… i mention that one cos ive seen it happen… disconnecting the board let the computer boot but an external monitor had to be used…
CPU could also be dead (did the machine have a habit of running hot?) or a bad chipset…
‘trick’ to try? hold the power button down while you plug the power brick in… soon as you see the power light come on let go of the button… ive gotten dead laptops to work with that one too…
sorry for the mind wandering / rambling post… but im half asleep and should be fully asleep… *snore*

@ Mephitidae (and everyone else).
It was fried. I’ll do a post tomorrow — with my new (damnit!) computer.
Cheers, all, and thanks …

@Jon:
Though I think Dredd and Meph have probably pointed you to the problem, there is one other thing you need to discount before giving up on the unit…
Practically every laptop is subject to damage to the power jack, mostly from the repeated plugging in and out. Provided the damage is limited to the power jack (and not to the motherboard connection), it could be one of the least expensive repairs.

yea just about to post that the mobo sounds fried, guess you found that out already

Quite common, lost my decked out computer a month ago with the same effects. Fan began to spin, then stopped. Nothing boots, motherboard light blinks to signal power supply failure. Seeing as your computer is made by IBM i suggest sending it to them if its still covered by warranty.

Seems like possibly a bad power supply. A few years ago Compaq laptops often had bad ps’s so it’s not just a rare problem.
IBM publishes some excellent (and free) service manuals for their notebook pc’s and that’s the first thing to check out.
Just noticed that GIGANEWS no longer seems to be running an ad banner on this site. They’ve pulled their ads from several sites recently, so unless it’s incredible coincidence, something’s obviously going on at Giganews.
