eBay wins ‘top honors’ for privacy

p2pnet news view Advertising | P2P:- They have to be joking!

Right?

eBay is being lauded by the Ponemon Institute, a “research ‘think tank’ dedicated to advancing privacy and data protection practices,” and TRUSTe, an “independent, privately held organization best known for its Web Privacy Seal,” as “Most Trusted” company for privacy.

That’ll effectively splash mud all over any credibility Ponemon or  TRUSTe may have had.

The news comes in a ReadWriteWeb which says, “While the companies may excel on paper, it’s hard to believe these are the top privacy-related companies based on public sentiment alone. It appears that the Ponemon Institute’s expert panel and the 6,486 US consumers surveyed have lost their long term memories.”

The claims are touted by TRUSTe in a puff piece which kicks off with, “eBay Takes The Top Honor; Verizon, USPS and Facebook rise in the ranks”.

“Year in and year out our Most Trusted Companies for Privacy study is a fascinating snapshot of public sentiment toward business, and the overall drop of financial services organizations in 2009 continues that trend,” the item has Ponemon boss Larry Pogemon — sorry, Ponemon — stating.

It also quotes eBay’s Scott Shipman stating with a straight face:

“We are honored to learn that TRUSTe and the Ponemon Institute have recognized our leading practices for privacy, security and trust — all qualities we feel are synonymous with our brand.”

No need to stay tuned.
