Another man kills himself at France Telecom
p2pnet news view | Off Topic:- Another France Telecom worker has committed suicide, throwing himself from a bridge onto a busy street.
His death brings the number of employees who’ve killed themselves witin the past two years to 24.
The man, a 51-year-old father of two from Annecy in the French Alps, cited the unbearable “atmosphere” at France Telecom, says Sky News.
The string of deaths is being blamed on a, “barrage of emails from smartphones and personal computers” which are “stressing out employees,” said The Age recently.
Local union leader Patrice Diochet denounced work conditions at the Annecy branch as “unbearable,” saying the firm had, “failed to draw lessons” from the recent deahs, says the Telegraph.
Diochet, of the CFTC union, “said the worker in question was recently transferred from an after-sales division to the Annecy call centre, and had been singled out as emotionally fragile,” according to Diochet who’s also quoted as declaring:
“It’s shameful. He worked in a service long known to be unbearable.
“There was a real indifference, no humanity, all they talked about was numbers and workers were treated like sausage meat.

Did you notice the age range? 51 Middled aged.
These are those who would have the harder time to find another job if they lose this one, because of age discrimination in France.

“…because of age discrimination in France.”
This type of discrimination is not unique to France.

Makes me wonder what the suicide rate is in Canada or the US for telecom workers the past year. The same business practices have occurred here as it has occurred in France. Example, Bell laid off thousands, then Bell offered packages for people to leave, then Bell closed a unionized call center and moved it like a hundred kilometers away telling the workers if they don’t move to the new location then they are out of a job etc etc etc. Then Bell installs hidden camera’s (per the union) in their employee vehicles and such.
Has it gone under-reported in Canada and the US?
Is France telecom more cut-throat and abusive to their employee’s than, as an example, Bell?
I would be very curious to know the suicide stats of telecom workers in North America over the past year (and per company), just to compare, or see if it has gone unreported.
Raises questions.

@RW,
I think the pressure from being abused by companies knows no age barrier.
Also with the way the economy is even a young person will have troubles finding a job.
Also, France has a high unemployment rate among the young people (I don’t recall what it is, but it’s one of the highest unemployment rates for young people in all of Europe I believe).
So yeah age is a factor in many cases, but I don’t think this is the case here. However, if you are able to do some google searches and compile a list of ages, departments etc it would be an interesting story to read here (if you do it, send it off to Jon to put up).

My wife went to the doctor yesterday and the nurse at the clinic said alot of teenagers in our
area are attempting and committing suicide because they think the world will end in 2012
so they say what is the point of waiting for the ending.
2012, 2015, 2019, 2060 and the rest by mystics predicting an end have been wrong and
will always be wrong in my opinion so folks please dont do anything or let anyone in
your family do something stupid because of a movie and a few kooks wanting attention for personal reasons.
I actually partied in the 60’s and 80’s in California because these so called experts predicted
California would fall into the pacific ocean on such and such a date. Califorinia is still where it always has been.
Keep the Faith !
