Bishop Lahey and ‘the mystery of faith’

p2pnet news view | Crime:- Canadian Roman Catholic bishop Raymond Lahey said he hoped “to never again have to deal with such reprehensible behaviour” after overseeing a $15-million, out-of-court settlement to people who, when they were children, were sexually abused by priests.

Now he’s turned himself into Ottawa police after being charged with  importing and possessing child pornography.

Kiddie porn images were found on his laptop during a random search when he was returning from a trip abroad.

Archbishop Anthony Mancini of Halifax, “appealed to past victims of abuse and parishioners,” says the Toronto Star,  quoting him as stating:

“We are going through a very painful, contemporary experience of the mystery of faith.

“I call on you to be hopeful because we do believe in new life and in new possibilities.”

In a letter of resignation submitted after the porn was found, “I have already left the Diocese to take some much-needed time for personal renewal,” he said.

Lahey, 69, was the bishop of Antigonish in Nova Scotia until his exposure.

He’s to appear in court on November 4.

“We are going through a very painful, contemporary experience of the mystery of faith.”

Organized religion! It’s payback time for all those manipulations that you did for centuries.

Islam will have its payback time too, it’s a matter of time.

It’s hard to see shades of grey in a world so black, but actually, I can see a difference between a child on a laptop and a child atop a lap. To justify images requires a similar flawed, but understandable logic to listening to mp3’s.

This mp3 already exists, so I might as well listen to it, how would it help the artist if I delete it now?

(Yes, I know there are differences, too.)

I had no idea that inspecting laptops was a “routine” and accepted practice of our Canadian border officials. While I certainly agree Lahey’s just another sicko pedophile in a priest’s robe, I still find it disturbing that Canada would subscribe to what is really unlawful or unreasonable search and seizure.

Despite numerous complaints by the victims to the Catholic Church, and documented statements by evaluating psychiatrists, this man escaped a proper investigation. What was currently on his laptop was just a reinforcement of what church and police officials, and the community at large already knew – Lahey should never have been allowed to continue interacting with the community’s children or wearing the robe and collar.

I say, “Beware the spin” on this stuff.
This matter, not unlike many similar matters, should have been dealt with accordingly, based on plenty of past submissions by everyone. But instead, and as usual, it will be used as another illustrative example to justify the “need” for such searches.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Why is it that these priests are always accused of molesting boys? Not that I want them to be molesting little girls, or any children, I just think it’s strange that they all seem to prefer boys.
