"If there is one thing you can be sure with Gnutella, - it's that its developers are continuing to improve it."

I've played with all the various P2P applications over the years, and while I'm admittedly no lover of the mp3 format, I have to say my recent experiences with the Gnutella-1 network (via the open source app Shareaza which also supports Gnutella-2, ed2k, and BitTorrent) have been overwhelmingly good. Speeds are very very fast, especially if there is more than one source (though even one source is usually fairly fast too). With a popular mp3 file (even a large one) that has at least 2 to 3 sources, downloads usually take only seconds on my DSL connection. Easily the fastest downloads I've ever seen. Not a great network if your looking for anything else though. But for all those Kazaa folks into sharing music who are looking for an alternative, this is certainly one really great option for them.

If there is one thing you can be sure with Gnutella, - it's that its developers are continuing to improve it. I think it won't be long until Gnutella beats the likes of FastTrack and ed2k, both of which have not seen many improvements recently.
