Firefox 1.0 launches today

p2pnet.net News:- Today is the day for Mozilla. Its Firefox 1.0 goes online in its first ‘official’ version and the promo blurb says it, "empowers you to browse faster, more safely and more efficiently than with any other browser".

Opera would dispute the ‘faster’ claim. It says its version 7.54 is the fastest : )

Either way, users will decide and while they do, Firefox and Opera are both giving Microsoft serious pause for thought.

And Bill and the Boyz in their turn are continuing to provide plenty of reasons for people to switch from Internet Explorer to the two smaller browsers.

As Mozilla phrases it: "We are providing these instructions due to the recent disclosure of severe security exploits in Internet Explorer and the recommendation to switch to an alternative browser, such as Firefox, by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), a division of the Department of Homeland Security."

Get yer Firefox 1.0 download here.

If you’re stuck with IE, you can improve the experience a little by using this thing: http://breasy.com

I am looking at the price of Firefox as compared to Opera.
Hmmmmmm. I have tried both and noticed no difference in speed. I am highspeed cable. So what is my choice ? FireFox. Fast Free customizable with extentions, did I mention it’s Free. And Firefox is a way cooler name.

I switched to firefox some time back, and never looked back. Tabbed browsing, live bookmarks, fast rendering, tons of extensions like mouse gestures (navigate using your mouse) and ad-block (block all those pesky ads from doubleclick), popup-blocking … To stick with IE would be ludicrous.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

I can’t wait until someone releases an extension to replace ‘explorer.exe’ as the desktop explorer! That would surely sever the cord between the Windows Explorer (which is plagued with security issues!!!) and the NT Kernel (which on its own is rather nice)

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Opera is faster than FF and all features are perfectly integrated and co-working.
    Quality costs, that’s all.

The one other market ( leader? ) that is always missed out, but with same if not better features than firefox is maxthon.

The biggest problem with firefox is the browsers annoying trait of locking up when you load a webpage in the first instance, this can be done by setting homepage as default to yahoo.com – close the broswer and reopen, it will then lock if you try to do anything before the page has fully loaded.

maxthon i found while browsing randomly for a tabbed browser. its a wholey more usefull program and has more functions as standard.

i have no swioctehd the full office over to it and everyones enjoying the same tab features but better compatabilty to MS only sites :D

sounds interesting, has this been attempted anywhere? or even highlighted in development?

  8. Reader's Write Says:

In general, I still use Mozilla, but Opera is the ONLY modern browser that is small enough to run on my old laptop with 40 MB of RAM (maxed out).

firefox is just riding on operas back. it had tabs before firefox was thought of

Never tried Firefox, but I’m really happy its making IE users put IE where it belongs, in the trash. People often don’t realize that Microsoft has lost the browser war on one platform already. Most O/S X users are either with Safari or with Firefox. MS has even stopped updating IE for Mac, although that is somewhat of a mixed blessing considering how people claim that Macs lack the software. I’m happier that I use a better product.

  11. Reader's Write Says:

bah Opera 7.60 is the fastest ;)

Finally 1.0! I’ve been with Firefox since .8 something and haven’t looked back. I couldn’t take the limitations of IE and no other browser had the feel and comfortability of Ff. I tried both Opera and Avant but I just couldn’t get into them like Firefox. Now they just have to catch up on the extensions before I install this build. Firefox has the right idea by makeing their browser costumizable, I like having the control over what feature are in my browser like tabs, gestures and live book marks, theres just so much you can do with this thing I don’t see any other browser on the market even coming close. And as for the speed issue and the claim that Opera is faster thats the least of my worries when it comes to browsers. I personaly look for security first then compatability and features. IE sucks, its sucked for a long time, Avant and Opera are just too busy and alien for me, all the rest are just out of the picture. The only thing left to say is if you haven’t checked out Firefox yet nows the time. Take this browser for a test drive and I’m sure you change over; its just that good. Mozilla ROCKS!!!!

    Opera is faster for me
