Recording Academy wades in
p2pnet.net News:- The record label cartel-backed US Recording Academy has signed up for Hollywood’s last dispairing bid to get Morpheus / Grokster decision reversed.
Under it, the Federal Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that p2p companies can’t be held held, “contributorily or vicariously liable for copyright infringements by users”.
Application owners StreamCast Networks and Grokster yesterday filed a brief with the US Supreme Court against Hollywood’s petition for a writ of certiorari.
Today, the entertainment industry responded with a barrage of counter-briefs.
Now, backed by the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), American Federation of Television ad Radio Artists (AFTRA), Country Music Association (CMA), Gospel Music Association (GMA), Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, Jazz Alliance International and the Rhythm & Blues Foundation, the Academy is also petitioning the Supreme Court.
Laughably, the Academy says it, “seeks to portray the true ‘David vs. Goliath’ nature of this argument”.
With 20 and more organization backing the Big Four record label cartel and the Big Seven music studios against two, small independent companies, it’s not hard to see which is which.
“Although many think of music makers as a hugely successful and well-to-do group of artists, in reality, most of those within the creative community lead a humble and challenging existence and depend on being paid for their work – just like everyone else – in order to survive,” adds Academy president Neil Portnow.
