Microsoft vs Google

p2pnet.net News:- Rumours that Microsoft will enter the search engine stakes have been bolstered by news that its MSN division will make an announcement today related to “online-search technology”.

This gives rise to, “expectations that the company will begin offering its own Internet search engine tomorrow,” says the Seattle Times, going on that yesterday, Bill Gates told shareholders, “We have a lot of new things coming up in search.”

Gates told the World Economic Forum in Davos, “Google kicked our butts”.

“In July, MSN remodeled its Web-search page in a style that Google pioneered – simple, clean and free from advertising,” says the Seattle Times.

Bill and the Boyz have been been working on a new tool to search files stored in a user’s personal computer slated to go online by the end of the year and, “Google again beat Microsoft to the punch in this area, releasing a test version of its “Google Desktop Search” last month,” says the report, adding:

“It is unclear whether MSN also plans to release its desktop-search software tomorrow along with its new Internet search engine.”

However, “Despite the deep pockets and hefty reputations of Microsoft and Yahoo, Google will be tough to catch,” believes Business Week.

“With its Spartan Web interface and fast-loading pages, it has locked in a loyal base of users,” says a report, going on:

“Even as Yahoo launched its own search product early this year, backed by a big branding push, Google steadily gained market share.”

Redmond’s fledgling search effort could be in for a “bumpy ride” until it can draw on its “strongest assets,” states the report.

MSN is full of popups and tracking cookies… I’ll be sticking with Google.
