. Its all about chasing shadows.
By that I mean latching on to this or that latest, most innovative idea that some self styled money making guru has put out in the hope it’ll go viral and make them a lot of money off the backs of all the headless chickens who will follow them blindly down a blind alley. Its a shame but a truism nonetheless that people will follow where someone they see as an expert leads. Even if they lead them to certain disaster, which is what most of the gurus tend to do to their flocks.
The trick is to recognize a shadow when you see it!

Great article. One fact check: if 27% of isohunt users are American, and 4% are Canadian, then per-capita Canadians _are_ bigger p2p users. If Canadians pirated equivalently to Americans, then only ~2.7% of isohunt hits should be from Canadians.

Yep.
Or, stage a false flag event, blame it on that country, and go in and TAKE EVERYTHING!

David Jacobson
He suggests stronger legislation would be mutually beneficial as it will encourage innovation in both countries.

Innovation?

Would that be like the American Company that Registered the Famous Australian invention "UGG Boots" and then sued all the Australian Ugg Boot Manufacturers out of business so that their Chinese factory could make Ugg Boots to sell worldwide?

Yes, I guess that is what he meant by innovation.
The American business model, Register Trademark of other peoples IP and then Sue, Sue, Sue.

What a wonderful innovative business idea.

admittedly I wasn't a koltai fan. In fact I poked fun at his heritage.
I knew Barrie McKenna's article smelled of shit. But this is excellent.

Props for taking the time to literally flatten this writer.

techDirt touches on it as well

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20091021/0252526618.shtml

Barrie McKenna got taken for a ride here by the recording industry. His writeup included multiple factual errors, significant errors of omission, and a gross misunderstanding of what's actually happening in the music industry these days.

But, but, Tom. The new US ambassador to Canada just said Canada doesn't protect artists, entertainers, authors and software developers, and we need stronger laws to protect *their* interest.

The Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association says we suck and are a failure!

Canada deserves spot on U.S. naughty list due to lax copyright laws
http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5hKHhpEtc-DndLRhdv6OVaN8zupJw

MONTREAL — The new U.S. ambassador won't apologize for his country's decision to scold Canada for its lax copyright laws by placing it on a priority watch list.

David Jacobson says Canada may be America's closest friend and neighbour, but that shouldn't exempt it from respecting copyright laws that protect artists, entertainers, authors and software developers.

He suggests stronger legislation would be mutually beneficial as it will encourage innovation in both countries.

Jacobson made the comments at a Montreal conference on Canada-U.S. relations.

Wendy Noss of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association says Canada sticks out in a bad way on this naughty list which includes countries like China, Algeria, Pakistan and Russia.

She says Canada has failed for more than a decade to amend copyright laws to deal with the digital age, leaving creative industries at a loss when it comes to fighting piracy.

---

BTW, good topic. I think you wrote a similar topic about a year ago as well.

WOW Tom, nice job!

Though I am sure someone will try to debunk this by picking out a flaw or two, and try to imply that it doesn't work for the whole argument.

That's something climate change people get pissy and defensive about, because they assume if one or two premises fail then the entire argument fails, which isn't true.

Don't worry Tom, you have more than enough premises and analysis should one or two premises (or premii @JonNewton) fail the main argument still has an overwhelming sound backing by all the other premises.

Let's hope someone writes something in CBC about Barrie's post.
