‘Screw You, Mrs Marmite Lover’

p2pnet news view | Movies:- A central feature in all Harry Potter films is the huge Hogwarts dining hall with vast tables laden with delicious food.

Hold that thought.

“A generation has been taught by TV chefs to aim high in their cuisine, but some people are taking it further and opening mini-restaurants in their living rooms,” said the BBC in September, going on »»»

What underground restaurants have in common, though, is the chance for amateur chefs to test their skills for a paying public and an emphasis on eating as a social experience.

One of the first to open her home to hungry strangers was Ms Marmite Lover, who does not want to give her real name. As well as hosting regular dinners, she reviews venues and is writing a book about underground dining.

She says the emphasis on eating communally is what makes underground restaurants special.

Back to Harry, now a Harry Potter-themed dinner at Mrs Marmite Lover’s, “has been banned by Warner Brothers, because they say it infringes its copyright,” says the Telegraph, going on:

“The not-for-profit event, which has been renamed ‘Generic Wizard Night’, was to have a menu of dandelion wine, pumpkin soup and Dumbledore’s favourite – mint humbugs. Guests would have been led down ‘Diagon Alley’ by the side of the house and been met by a portrait of the “Fat Lady” who would have demanded a password before they could be let in.”

Fun, and free PR for Warner.

But ‘Screw You, Mrs M,’ said Warner in effect, stating in a letter »»»

Dear Ms Marmite Lover. While we are delighted you are such a fan of the Harry Potter series, unfortunately your proposed use of the Harry Potter properties … without our consent would amount to an infringement of Warner’s rights.

However, “Other companies have welcomed their brands being used in Ms Marmite’s themed evenings,” says the Telegraph, adding:

“When she hosted a Marmite-themed dinner, rather than sending her a warning letter, Marmite made sure she was fully stocked up with plenty of Marmite – all for free.”
