"However, under certain circumstances, “this could pose a danger to children captured in street-level images if a company argues their work constitutes art,” says Denham in the story: “That raises the spectre of a company not blurring faces at all, and that predators could then obtain the information”."

What information? There's a school a couple streets over from my house and the camera mobile happened to snap a clear (well, as clear as any of their photos get) of a schoolgirl standing on the sidewalk. I live in the same neighborhood and I have no idea who she is, or how to find her. I could stand there and watch all the kids leave after school and chances are that I wouldn't be able to spot that particular girl. Sure, maybe a relative or close friend might recognize her, but it's not like you can click on the image and get "Melissa Johnson, age 13, 231 Oak St." It's just a blurry pic of a girl, no different than what I see every time I go to a store.

"People are simply being idiotic about this."

Gotta love these people that, because THEY don't understand the implications raised by all this, just come out and label others "idiots" for having their concerns. Classic.

My issue is that these photos are just that photos. It is not live video from a camera that is always on your street. It won't help predators. They don't need to know in advance that so and so has a kid. They can drive down the street and see the signs. People are simply being idiotic about this.

"Meanwhile, is giant online advertising company Google trying to reduce the impact of the storm of complaints by posting phony comments on sites which are critical of Street View?"

Yes it is. Of course.

The shills came out of the wood work fast, as we all saw.
