Newspapers continue downhill slide

p2pnet news view P2P:- In much the same way the corporate entertainment industry has lost its relevancy thanks to P2P communications, the downhill slide of the US press corps(e) continues as newspapers are forced to give way to online scribes, the vast majority of them ordinary people.

“The Audit Bureau of Circulatations reported today that the average weekday circulation of the nearly 400 daily papers that reported sales slid 10.6% between April and September compared to the same six-month period in 2008,” says the Los Angeles Times, going on, “That was bigger than the 7.1% decline recorded during the previous six months.”

Of America’s five biggest dailies, the Wall Street Journal, “displaced USA Today as the nation’s largest daily, notching a slim 0.6% gain in subscribers to reach slightly more than 2 million,” says the story, continung:

“USA Today’s circulation fell 17% to 1.9 million as the Gannett Co. paper, which gets many of its sales at hotels and airports, was hit by the slump in travel.

“The New York Times’ circulation fell 7.3%, to 927,851, making it the No. 3 paper. The Los Angeles Times was in fourth place with daily circulation of 657,467, down 11.1% from a year ago.

“The Washington Post rounded out the top five with a loss of 6.4%, to 582,844.”

Newspapers, “have seen their circulation decline sharply in recent years as readers increasingly have turned to online sources for news,”" says the LA Times, adding:

“Many of these websites are operated by the same newspapers that are losing traditional subscribers, but publishers are struggling to bring in enough online ad dollars to replace the loss of print advertising. And readers have been reluctant to pay for access to online newspapers sites.”

  1. Devil's Advocate Says:

Some of the mainstream publishers won’t be doing too well with their online versions, either, thanks to their failure to report the truth for so many years, since there are already free established independent sources of the truth all over the Internet.

Even sympatico.ca posts the truth about Bell more often than the Star!

    What’s a newspaper?

  3. Jay Says:

I read both the Province and the local Island papers online.

  4. Rob Says:

I haven’t watched the news or purchased a paper in about 3 years and that isn’t going to change. Why would i want to pay for fluff pieces and brain washing propaganda?!.Once online news is the only choice people will start to wake up to the NWO agenda in their masses!.

That’s if Obama doesn’t bail them out!

So he probably will as he can not allow the people to become fully aware.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Replace online with free and you have the real answer here. People are not willing to pay for news that doesn’t have a direct application to their lives. Especially when they can get the same news for free online. The solution is make newspapers 100% advertising supported.
