British Library goes Wi-Fi
p2pnet.net News:- A “staggering” 86% of visitors to the British Library have laptops, but people wanting to check their email, or do anything else online, had to go to a nearby Internet cafe.
That’s about to change, however.
The famous institution, which serves around 500,000 readers every year, has decided to offer Wi-Fi connectivity in the public areas of its building at St Pancras
Wi-Fi technology has been on trial since May and usage levels make the Library London’s most active public hotspot, states a press release, going on:
“The new service offers wireless internet access (WiFi) throughout the 11 reading rooms, the 225-seat conference auditorium, the café and restaurant and even the outdoor Piazza area. It will enable readers, researchers and business-people to connect to the internet and access email using either their existing service provider or by using the Library’s own pay-as-you-go service.”
Broadband wireless connectivity will be made available in the eleven reading rooms, the auditorium, cafe, restaurant, and outdoor Piazza area.
“The new wireless service is operated independently from the existing Library private network infrastructure, therefore ensuring there is no security risk to critical business applications and that the Library’s private network is protected from laptop borne viruses or local hackers.”
Library PayGo Rates to be used within 30 days are 60 minutes for £4.50, or 30 minutes for £3.00.
