Dredd, I completely forgot about Macrovision as it never affected me. That crap was put into VHS tapes for purchase, but the rental tapes I always copied (yeah, I had two vcrs) never had it. The dvd player I bought was modded - no macrosplat and I could use the remote it came with to switch regions or turn off region coding.

" I guess I was spoiled, I remember the old VCR, that recorded anything that you saw on tv with no interference from broadcasters or any monthly fee. "

That's not ENTIRELY tue. Out of the same fear of 'piracy' industry VHS tapes started to come out with comething called Macrovision copy protection. This was meant to prevent playing a movie on one VCR and recording to a blank tape in another VCR. This protection, like all others, of course, failed, but continues to be a part of all industry VHS tapes.

I'm not a big fan of dvrs like TIVO, as they require a monthly subscription fee and from what I have read some of them have rather crappy "broadcast flag" type drm where broadcasters can limit the amount of time you have a recording on them, or even prevent shows from being recorded altogether. It just sounds like one big heaping plate of suck to me. I guess I was spoiled, I remember the old VCR, that recorded anything that you saw on tv with no interference from broadcasters or any monthly fee.

Will the entertainment industry just please die now? They are like an old man with a walking stick shouting to everyone that the younger generation is plotting against the older generation!
