New ‘DontDisconnectUs’ UK Three Strikes site

p2pnet news view P2P | Politics:- When are they going to get it right?

The Three Strikes and You’re Off The Net plan attributed to Peter Mandelson (lord) in the UK   is no more his than it’s Nicolas Sarkozy’s in France, or any of the other government leaders in countries such as  Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.

The project is wholly owned by the Hollywood studios and Big Four record labels  who dreamed it up and are,  with the help of the corporate press corpse, promoting it at unimaginable expense around the world.

Mandelson, enjoying a close encounter of the slime kind as per the Reuters pic on the right, is merely the messenger, as are the ‘leaders’ of the other countries, all of whom are touting virtually identical Three Strikes schemes.

The idea is:  governments take on the role of movie and record industry copyright agents, the bill footed by local taxpayers,  while ISPs act as enforcers, ratting out their own customers.

Under it, alleged file sharers get two warnings and if they ignore them, are tossed off the net on the say-so of the cartels, and without any kind of due process.

Now, “Copyright infringement through filesharing is illegal and the Government is right to tackle the issue,” says DontDisconnectUs, a new site set up by UK ISP TalkTalk, owned by Britain’s Carphone Warehouse.

The company is trying to con mums and dads into censoring their kids online.

Parents “would be able to block computers in the household from accessing certain filesharing sites such as the Pirate Bay, as well as pornography and gambling, without having to install extra software on the computer,” the Financial Times has Carphone  boss Charles Dunstone stating.

But that doesn’t mean he’s stupid enough to want to go after the people who pay his bills.

So he’s opposing the Three Strikes plan, suggesting people make their feelings known via the Downing Street Petition and Lobby Your MP, among other things.

Good idea.

Stay tuned.
