A: Once a console has been opened, Microsoft will not repair it. The warranty becomes void when you break the MS seals around the box.

A: NOT TRUE. The xbox hard drive is a separate piece of kit. You can transfer the HD from one xbox to another regardless of chipping.

They have every right to ban gamers modding there consoles!
At the end of the day, its class as stealing if you are illegally pirating games.
Designers have made those games and deserve some sort of credit for them!
Well done Microsoft, keep banning people who are not going to game sensibly.
At the end of the day, gaming is a bit of fun…so make it fun for everyone.

According to what I read, they discovered the modded consoles by people trying to play pirated games online before their official release date. If that’s true, a “stealth chip” isn’t going to help.

Also, I can’t help wondering; What happens when the modded console you buy used dies due to the infamous “red ring of death”? With MS repair it and return your modded console to you? Will you get back an un-modded one? Will they simply refuse to touch it because it’s been modded? I suppose you could say that they’re so cheap that people wouldn’t care, but as far as I know, there’s no way to back up the content on the HD, so if the system stops working, you’d lose everything on there.

It seems to me the obvious evolution is for gamers to learn to keep two consoles: one modded, and one un-modded for playing online multiplayer.

Yes, for now it would be advisable to not play pirated, muliplayer online games. Sometimes there is a catch where THEY can get you. Custom hardware, unlike the generic Intel PC, makes those catches easier. Imagine how happy the music industry would be if they could restrict the sale of music to discs for proprietary, game-like consoles.

this is major bullshit.

where i live, modding any device – phone, game console, pc, etc. – is absolutely legal. modding kits are sold in all major and several minor electronic shops and department stores.

also, many shops will do the modding for you.

i don’t have any game consoles or iphones or ipods, but if i did and i got blocked out of a game network that i pay entry to – is that how it works? – i would sue ms or nintendo or whoever is blocking me for doing what is legal where i live.

Way to go Microsoft. Not only have you flooded the pre-xmas market with second hand X-Boxes (cannibalising sales of new), but all gamers-in-the-know will now perceive the X Box as greatly reduced in value.

This would be like Apple instantly bricking all jail-broken iPhones.

Welcome to the tech-support costs as tons of kids’ parents ring up to ask why their 2nd hand X-Box can’t play online.

Hey, I know. Any such caller deserves a ’strike’ on their record don’t you think?

Only two more strikes to go and the entire family is off the Internet altogether.
