Doom 3 ‘worst video game’
p2pnet.net News:- Doom 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Half Life 2, Halo 2 and Resident Evil: Outbreak have been voted the top five worst video games (in descending order) by the National Institute on Media and the Family.
Right behind them are Outbreak, Psi Ops: the Mindgate Conspiracy, The Guy Game, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, Mortal Kombat Deception and Rumble Roses, also in descending order.
“Advances in brain science show that children’s experiences during their brain’s growth spurts have a greater impact on their brain’s wiring than at any other time of their lives,” says the institute, going on:
“The groundbreaking discoveries about the teenage brain reveal that the growth spurts continue throughout adolescence, making teens more impressionable than we thought. Teenagers are wiring the circuits for self control, responsibility and relationships they will carry with them into adulthood. The latest brain research shows that violent games activate the anger center of the teenage brain while dampening the brain’s ‘conscience’.”

It wasn’t voted “worst video game”.
It was voted top of the “games to avoid for your children and teens” list.
Very different things.

The violence and aggression-inducing potential of video games has not gone unnoticed by the US military, which has been developing its own versions to help render soldiers into mindless killing machines.

I second that…. The gameplay was way to linear. Also, it set 150 years into the future and no guns have flaslights attched to them!?

I have been playing violent video games since I was able to wield a controller. What are some video games without violence? Hmm…Pac man, no…frogger,no…dig dug, no…techmo bowl,no…Wait there are a couple. Pong and Tetris. I mean your character has “lives” in most games. Why? Because your character is facing opposition of some kind, and get’s killed (or shrunk to half his size, then dies =P). Almost all video game vanacular is based in violence. You can not separate violence from video games, or they would be no fun. Would I rather fight Mike Tyson in person, or on a NES. Not a tough choice. If anything, the games satisfy a need for violence and conflict. Humans have always been this way. Maybe this outlet for my natural human rage has been satisfied my nearly 30 years on earth by this artificial violence. I once had a “carry conceal” permit and regularly packed a glock 30(compact 10 round .45). I never once drew my weapon in the tensest of situations. If the “research” regarding video game violence were true, I would have shot someone – or hit them with my car – something. And again, how is it different from movies or cartoons? Is it OK for cartoons to portray violence because it is against a robot and not an organic? Some “activist” have too much time to worry about petty things that can’t/won’t/don’t need to change. I bet they would find thier own children will be more mentally matured if they spent more time with them than trying to figure out why some people/children can not control thier own violence.
I will always choose “fake” violence over the real thing. Most would. Those that choose “actual” violence are likely affected by far more than just a cathode ray gun on glass with a interactive 10-button controller.

Yes, it may be true that you have not murdered or harmed anyone yet… but the truth is that there are those who, through the influence of violent video games (and violent music and movies), have been influenced and mentally numbed enough to go and do harm. There have been people who have been adversly affected and warped because of the violence of video games (just like the fact that there have been people influenced by advertisement). As well, research is increasingly showing that TV and video games don’t make people maturer, that make them dumber (to state is simply enough for some of you to understand). Pick up Niel Postman’s ‘Amusing Ourselves To Death’ and have a laugh as you read about how the media bombardment can effect people.
For anyone reading this, I also recommend you check out http://www.truelies.org (http://www.truelies.org/index.htm if the other link doesn’t work). It is an organization that has been around for a number of years that examines the truth behind what media and much of pop-culture is presenting–from sex, drugs, violence and sucide. That is of course if you can detatch yourself from you games long enough….
p.s. with a little research you can find a number of accounts of fans of GTA who have, after playing the game, gone out and purposefully ran people over. I believe True Lies has some of those links…

i agree. there are plenty of high adrenelin games out there without having to use ones that have you killing and maiming and there just as much fun

You miss the point. There is violent influence everywhere. If you want the government/moral zealots to dictate how you can entertain yourself because some people are “negatively affected”, you are screwing yourself. Most violence occurs in crimes for drugs/money(greed). Video games/media are responsible for very little violence when you compare it to “crime”. People are murderous in countries where there are very few televisions. Video games are the wrong tree to bark up. Economic disparity are more likely to cause violence tha video games.

This is outrageous! I am a parent and love these games myself. So you people are crazy!

Yes, because all soldiers are mindless killing machines. Enjoy your freedom at their expense. If you don’t want your kids playing these games then don’t buy it for them or monitor their allowance. These games aren’t cheap so who is providing them with the money to buy them? Personally I do not believe these games have a negative effect on anyone over the age of 13. Whatever happened to good parenting?

Please don’t site Niel Postman. The man is a crackpot. The book is circular. Print and reading was a “novel waste of time” when it became accessible to the masses. Don’t call for censorship call… for better parenting.

In my opinion, these Video games are like “Barney” when you compare them to the every day reports on how many people have died in Iraq with all the corporate right-wing bias thrown in that makes the whole thing look like it’s just the greatest thing ever. I feel that these games are not damaging our teenagers.. Hell i’m one of them, Half-Life 2 is now my favorite game of all time, and I don’t feel violent at all.
I have been playing video games even since I can remember owning a computer, and I’m NOT a violent person. Now don’t think that I’m just saying this to make me feel better about playing these M rated games (even though i’m 1 year below the suggested age, shows you what good ESRB is!), I think GTA:SA is a HIDIOUSLY TERRIBLE peice of racist junk. Even hearing people at school talk about it makes me sick. In my opinion, games where you mostly shoot aliens or monsters are not as damaging as a demeaning, racist, gang-glorifying, drug-refrencing game like GTA:SA.
In conclusion, I feel that most of these games are not damaging to youth, perhaps only those who are well under the suggested age bracket. In my opinion, real life violence shown every day on the news is more damaging than any game could be. I feel that parents should not be so eager to blame someone else for their child’s mental state, as most violent teenagers i know, have some form of challenging parental situation at home, be it divorce or simply parents who don’t spend enough time with them.
I hope you like my wonderfull essay/comment.

It’s me again… Just adding something.
Maybe it’s not Youth we need to worry about with regards to video game violence:
