Kazaa No 1 for Spyware
p2pnet.net News:- Sharman Networks’ Kazaa p2p application is Spyware Public Enemy Number 1.
And it’s popularity is what makes it dangerous.
These conclusions were reached by Computer Associates via its research for PestPatrol product, says CNET News, going on that CA found Kazaa was top of its spyware list, “because of its widespread popularity”.
“CA gave Kazaa a high ‘clot factor,’ its measure of how much a program slows a machine by adding unnecessary registry entries and directories,” the story states. “However, classifying a popular application like Kazaa as spyware is a delicate matter, and CA admits this creates difficulties in attaching labels.”
CNET has CA vp of security strategy saying, “Kazaa does something useful. I’m not going to say that it doesn’t. But turn that around - you’re allowing millions of strangers onto your machine. (Kazaa) is No. 1 because of the amount if copies it’s got out there.”
CA said other p2p apps could also degrade network performance and consume storage space because they, too, “are bundled with adware or spyware”.

I find it interesting that a large p2p provider such as kazaa is given a pass in civil courts while other non profit (work at a loss) providers face possible federal charges. It seems to me that kazaa is making money off spyware and advertising on a network that (like all p2p networks) have some level of piracy occuring, which seems more criminal to me.
Also, I’m pretty sure kazaa notes it’s spyware in the EULA, but I thought spyware is was in some form illegal now in the US?
