p2pnet: for sale
p2pnet news view P2P:-
Yesterday, I learned my principal source of funding has come to an end which, unless something turns up soon, means December will be the last month of publication for p2pnet, which went online in 2002.
I spent most of last night thinking about my options, and decided to try keep going with a drastically reduced income, praying for the best, would be unwise.
I’ve been near to closing down twice before.
Most recently, in 2007, “I`m afraid time and money have run out for p2pnet.net and I`m going to have to sell it,” I posted, continuing, “I`m looking for offers starting at $30,000.”
A patron who believed p2pnet was worth keeping online stepped forward at the last minute and has been paying most of the bills ever since. Unfortunately for us both, however, he’s now struggling to keep his own businesss going and has had to stop.
So now, in 2009, once again I`m looking for offers starting at $30,000.
If you`d like to talk about possibilities, please email me at p2pnet @ shaw. dot ca and I`ll be glad to call you back, anywhere in the world.
Beneath is the Awststats chart for 2009.

I use it because I understand it’s one of the most reliable, drawing its stats from the log.
As I said yesterday, “If you`d like to go into partnership with me, or buy me out and monetise the site with me continuing to provide content, or if you know someone you think might be interested in any other way, please let me know.”
It “might be hard to sell a site that`s burdened with existing lawsuits,” said Martin in a Reader’s Write to yesterday’s post.
However, “The site isn`t burdened with lawsuits,” I replied. “I am.
“I`m being sued, not p2pnet. One case resulted in a major, precedent-setting victory for free speech in Canada, and the other, brought against me by Kazaa boss Nikki Hemming, has been hanging over my head for four years. It`s slated to be heard in February. Other threats weren`t followed up.”
Cheers! And thanks. And all the best …

Never mind Jon. You now have a2f2a.com to fall back on.
All the best.

@ RW above:
Nope. a2f2a.com is something I’m doing because I believe in it. But I’m not getting paid.

Since Jon told me yesterday about our changed circumstances we have been doing a lot of thinking and talking. I don’t know about the rest of you people but sometimes my brain just engages in a whole range of free-associations. I haven’t had time to tie them together and smooth them out but here they are:
- one of the thoughts which ran through my head was: in a weird analogy Jon is experiencing the worst nightmare of a Billy Bragg or of any other musician – he supplies a cultural product and, right now, doesn’t know whether he is going to get paid.
- to paraphrase Chris Ovenden (http://www.p2pnet.net/story/24704) perhaps the time has come to see if p2pnet has enough value to give it a price. By that I mean a price to its users. I believe Jon’s advertisers value it.
- Jon says above he is looking to sell the site: a notable story here on Vancouver Island was the recent employee buy-out of the Harmac Mill in Nanaimo. The employees, along with some investors, now own and operate the mill. In the case of p2pnet, if 3000 of the visitors to the site paid $1 per month that money would take care of our sudden shortfall.
Just some ramblings

Liz and Jon,
I would gladly pay $10 a month, and hope others would be interested in doing so as well. I’ll pop a cheque in the mail today.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Thanks, Dorothy. Once again.

If there weren’t takers at $30,000 last year there won’t be any this year. Maybe a best price auction? you could start at $1000 opening bid to see what you can get out of it. Shame to see it go for 30,000 or zero. Maybe do it on eBay?

This is some bad news. I’ve been an avid reader of your website for the last half year and you are one of the most interesting sites I know. It would be a shame to see you go and I’m sure there are enough people willing to donate to keep the site up. I must not be the only one willing to pay at least $10 a month to help you out. Why not bring up this problem on news sites like digg and reddit? If you’d post an article asking everyone to help get it on the digg frontpage we could reach even more people. I’m sure it can be done, and even if it fails, you could fall back to a free blogspot to keep spreading the word.
All the best and excuse me for my english, MrAwesome

Not really the message I expected too see, when I opened this site…
I truly hope you will continue this site, Jon, it has been a very nice place for many people over many years now. Whatever the outome will be, I do wish to thank you (and all other contributors) for making this very spot ‘that awesome’. You made me a ‘happy camper’ for sure. Fair & balanced news; input from different angles; etc…
Here’s to hoping someone will help you out, by all means possible.
Tonight I’ll toast on you! Cheers!
