Palin tells Marg Delahunty Canada should ‘dismantle’ public health-care system Canadian Press
Marg Delahunty has braved the wilds of the American Midwest to come face-to-face with Sarah Palin. Comedian Mary Walsh’s beloved character button-holed the former Alaska governor at a recent book-signing in Columbus, Ohio, only to be strong-armed away from Palin by a cabal of security guards. The action was documented on Tuesday night’s “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” but four days later, Walsh was still marvelling at her close encounter with one of the most controversial politicians on the planet. “We told her we’re from Canada, and we’re just looking for a few words of encouragement for the Canadian conservatives who have worked so tirelessly to destroy the socialized medicare that we have,” Walsh recalled Tuesday from St. John’s. “Four huge big burly guys started pushing, and I pushed back, but I got her attention, and she told us to keep the faith, something like that, and said we’re all trying for the same thing.”
Man marries a videogame Plugged In
I now pronounce you husband and what?! In another sign that the world is about to collapse, multiple blogs are reporting that a fan of the Nintendo DS dating sim Love Plus (you know, the really creepy one) liked his virtual lady so much that he decided to marry her. For real. Apparently, a Japanese gamer known as ‘Sal9000′ was officially wed to Nene Anegasaki, one of the game’s three virtual girlfriends, in what must have been the weirdest ceremony in the history of ceremonies. We can only assume that Ms. Pac-Man was the maid of honor.
Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde wants your credit card number P2P Blog
For years, the Pirate Bay was the place to go to if you wanted to share movies, music or other digital goods. Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde, who resigned from his job as the site’s spokesperson earlier this year, now has his eyes set on a different kind of loot: Sunde is one of the founders of the Swedish start-up Kvittar that promises to keep track of all of your purchases and offer a kind of online locker for receipts. From Kvittar’s website:
Escaping from hell The Economist
‘Precious’,, which was released across America on November 20th, and opens in Europe early next year, should in any rational world be the most depressing 109 minutes anyone could spend in the cinema. Yet it isn’t. Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones is an obese, illiterate teenage mother from Harlem who is trapped in a horrific cycle of incest and abuse. Her mother has allowed the girl’s father to rape her regularly since childhood, fathering one Down’s syndrome daughter and another child that is on the way. She hates Precious for ’stealing’ her boyfriend, and avenges herself with verbal and physical abuse that is designed to keep the victim from ever leaving the nest, where mother and daughter live alone with the shades pulled down and the television always tuned to game shows.
Weak economy hurts music publishing Financial Times
Music publishing, once one of the few stable areas of an industry suffering from declining CD sales and online piracy, is starting to suffer from the weak economy, results from Warner Music showed on Tuesday. Shares in Warner Music fell 11 per cent, or 78 cents, to $6.28 by midday in New York as it reported an unexpected fourth-quarter loss of $18m, or 12 cents per share, driven largely by the layoff of some employees working on CD compilations and box sets. A reported 3.8 per cent rise in revenues from the Warner Chappell publishing arm was flattered by a $25m royalties settlement between the publishing and recorded music industries. But this concealed a 32.3 per cent drop in synchronisation revenues earned from advertising and films.
Google to track TiVo viewing habits CNEt news
Google and TiVo know you accidentally watch a few ads while fast-forwarding through the commercial breaks of your recorded programs, and they’d like a little more data to back that up. Google plans to add TiVo “television viewing data” to its existing Google TV Ads program, the two companies said in a press release Tuesday. Google TV Ads is the company’s attempt to re-create its AdWords and AdSense model on the small screen through a partnership with Dish Network, and it wants to use TiVo data to help its advertising clients measure how and when their ads are viewed.
