BBC to ’scale back’ website
p2pnet news view TV | Radio | P2P:- Aunty, aka the Beeb, aka the British Broadcasting Corporation, aka the BBC, will “rein in operations across TV, radio and internet,” says the Independent.
BBC director general Mark Thompson “indicated that there would be a reduction in the scale of its popular website, and possibly the closure of some of its digital channels or radio stations, following claims from politicians and rivals in commercially funded media that it had grown too big,” says the story.
But he “also made a fierce defence of the independence of the Corporation and claimed that public service broadcasters around the world were under threat because of the downturn in the media economy.”
Thompson “implied digital services such as BBC3, BBC4 and 6Music could face the axe,” says the Guardian, noting, “These cost millions to run but reach a relatively small audience compared with the mainstream BBC1, BBC2, Radio 1 and Radio 2.
Talking about the BBC website, he said it was “important to make sure the ‘many millions of pages that are up there need to be there. It might be a slightly smaller website. It might be stronger, making sure we are playing to our strengths’.”

Except – we are switching to Digital TV broadcating within the next few years. OTA digital broadcasts are already available to most people and will soon be mandatory. Perhaps the reason these channels only “reach” a relatively small audience is due to the quality of the programming?

I sure hope “BBC 3″, rumored for cuts, refers to a TV station and not BBC Radio 3, the classical and world music station, which is one of the cultural jewels of civilization.
6Music– which I used to describe as Serious Rock Music — has its moments, though when I have tuned it in lately its been way too much talk and not enough music. There should be a balance and usually the BBC, across its myriad channels, gets it pretty right.

“Sacling back”, what a joke! Mr Murdoch’s revenues shrink, so media giants want to remove a competitor for which the consumers have already paid with their taxes. Reminds me of an attempt from a weather forecast company in the US which tried to outlaw free weather data from the administration (again, funded by taxes).
The answer should be a clear no but are politicians courageous enough when they would be risking a negative campaign from media moguls?
