The Whale, beached
p2pnet.net News: - A Russian virus writer who was a member of the notorious “29A” gang has been found guilty by a Russian court of writing and distributing the W32/Stepan and Gastropod viruses and fined 3,000 rubles (just over $100).
Yevgeny Suchkov, who used the pseudonym “Whale”, admitted to having made available the source code for the viruses along with the additional code necessary to create virus variants.
A court in the central Russian town of Izhevsk handed down the sentence on Oct. 22, Kaspersky Laboratories reported.
The 29A group (29A being hexadecimal for “666”), has in the past claimed to be helping antivirus companies by alerting them to virus source codes. However, Suchkov was found guilty of creating very harmful programs himself, indicating that this was unlikely.
