Nintendo ‘unafraid’ of Sony PSP

p2pnet.net News:- Nintendo says it’s “not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf,” the wolf in question being Sony’s new flash-based PSP PlayStation Portable, launched in Japan yesterday and already virtually sold out, according to reports.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says his company is targeting, a different market of novice players.

Sony’s PSP won’t go on sale in overseas markets until sometime next year whereas more than a million of the new Nintendo DS portables, which went on sale November 21 in the US, December 2 in Japan and is planned for Europe in March 2005, have been sold already, he says.

Iwata doubts PSP will, “attract new fans the way Nintendo DS (dual screen ) has, wooing beginners, including young women who studies have shown usually dislike games”.

Sony hopes the, “golden success formula is still working,” Iwata SAID. “We don’t believe that.”

Nintendo says it plans to raise the manufacturing capacity for Nintendo DS to 1.5 million a month by April 2005.

I don’t believe there any newcomers, non-gamers probably don’t know that the two new hand helds exist. It’ll come down to the fans. With around 14million gamcube out there means a potential 14 million of DS sales. 74 million PS2’s that was reported months ago means a potential 74 million of PSP sales. There’s also around 14 million Xbox sold, as they adopt for power than anything else it looks more likely they’ll buy a PSP over a DS. It’s only the beginning for the PSP. If there are any signs of the DS sales slowing down after Christmas I think Iwata should be very afraid. Its good to see he’s putting on a brave face.

Yes, but also keep in mind all the Game Boy Advance and GBASP buyers. Plus the fact that the PS2 had a year’s start on the GCN, something which the DS is doing right now.
