Virginia Tech student admits beheading girl
p2pnet news view | Crime:- Haiyang Zhu, a 26-year-old ex-Virginia Tech graduate student, this morning admitted beheading Xin Yang, the woman he said he wanted to marry.
“Yang, 22, was decapitated at the Au Bon Pain cafe in the Graduate Life Center on Tech’s campus,” says the school newspaper Collegiate Times.
Xin Yang,”arrived in the United States on January 8, 2009, to pursue the American dream,” says Women in Crime. “She wanted to further her education and hoped for the opportunities that are available here to have a better life. Xin Yang began her studies as an accounting major at the prestigious business school at Virginia Tech less than a month ago.
“On January 21, 2009, her hopes and dreams came to an abrupt halt.”
Zhu was scheduled for a four-day jury trial beginning February 1, says the Roanoke Times, continuing:
“According to evidence presented this morning by Commonwealth’s Attorney Brad Finch, if the trial had gone forward, he would have presented two letters written by Zhu, claiming that he killed Yang because he loved her and she had rejected him.”
Finch “introduced two letters written by Zhu in which he professed his love for Yang,” says the Collegiate Times, adding:
“The first, written to Yang in January, said he had ‘fallen deeply in love’ with her and said that she left him ‘happy and fulfilled.’ Zhu wrote in the letter that he ‘will treasure her forever’ and then asked Yang to be his girlfriend, according to Finch.
The second letter, written from jail following Zhu’s arrest, was titled ‘A Will’ and outlined his reasons for the murder. Finch told the court the letter said, ‘He didn’t have any other choice but to kill her because he loved her so much.’ Finch said Zhu wrote that Yang ‘broke his heart’ when she said she had a boyfriend whom she had planned to marry.
Stephanie Cox, Zhu’s attorney, twice interrupted Finch’s description of the letters, “but Montgomery County Circuit Judge Bobby Turk allowed the presentation of the evidence to continue,” says the story.
Virginia Tech was the scene off another tragedy in April, 2007. Then, more than 20 people were killed after a gunman went on a murderous rampage.
