The Digital Copyright Canada forum has a Petition for Users' Rights which includes: "We further call upon Parliament ... to recognize the right of citizens to personally control their own communication devices."

By signing this petition you are sending a message to the Canadian parliament that you disagree with having these private security guards in your home, and having the government disallowing you from giving them the boot.

http://www.digital-copyright.ca/petition/

Get your family, your friends (, your enemies) to sign it. Consider writing a letter to your member of parliament.

Canadian legislation is coming soon -- possibly February -- and is based on their Interim report on Copyright: http://www.digital-copyright.ca/node/view/550

Get involved and fight this!

It is worse than that.

All an encryption or copy proteciton scheme is is a format change. A complicated one, but merely a format change nonetheless.

Compatibility is the lifeblood of the computing platform. Even the mighty microsoft has to be compatible with other companie's formats in order to maintain its market dominance.

Computers will go the way of the dodo.

It's illegal now to make a program compatible with DRM restricted media because it is an "illegal circumvention device".

This is being applied now to video game consoles and their mod chips.

Weather a program or a mod chip, it is it's mediums equivalent of the adjustable wrench. It's stealing to repair or enhance your own car, you shouldn't be allowed to market, purchase, or own those evil wrenches. That comment is considered ludicrous, yet that is what is happening with game consoles. They now refer to xbox modding as "legally sketchy".
