Wal-Mart, Linspire, laptop

p2pnet.net News :- If ever proof was needed that Microsoft’s monopoly is being sundered, it comes with news that Wal-Mart has entered the computer market head-on with a $498 Linux laptop. And it’s running Linspire: Lindows that was.

The $498 Balance laptop comes with the operating system, Internet suite and Microsoft-file compatible office suite, and can be used with both dial-up modems and broadband connections, says Linspire, which is also selling the computer from its site.

The laptop’s Mozilla Internet suite includes a browser and email program able to display Web-based forms, PDF documents, images, and multimedia files, and its IM program works with AOL, MSN and Yahoo! logins.

“Because it is based on Linux, the Linspire operating system is immune to security threats targeting Microsoft Windows software including viruses, Trojan horses and spyware,” says Linspire.

Specifications:

  • 1.0 GHz processor
  • 128 MB RAM, expandable up to 512 MB with included SODIMM slot
  • 14.1” LCD screen
  • Included software:
  • Linspire 4.5 operating system

This is great! I’ve been waiting for a product running Linux to appear with all the necessary functionality req’d to compete with
Windows. Question: Will this package run JUNO?

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Yes and no. Juno software only works on Windows. But if you extract your username and password and phone number it dials, then you have all the information needed to manually create a dial-up connection in any operating system. Use Dialguard to do this. It works on XP, but needs to run in Win98 mode.

    Download Dialguard: http://persocite.francite.com/Lusifer3300/Dialgrd.zip

This might not be related to the laptop,I have a geniune Linspire five-O can I install it to my 17 pc units? I just hope Linspire
    is not greed like microsoft.
