Who’ll be the next federal privacy commissioner?
p2pnet news view P2P | Politics:- Canadian privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart is leaving her office this year. Her appointment comes to an end on November 30.
So who’ll replace her? One of the assistant privacy commissioners, perhaps?
Is there a short-list of people who might have what it takes to replace her, although who else could fill the job of privacy commissioner of Canada with the balance and justice she brought?
Big shoes to fill.
Or will we get someone who works best under the control of a corporation or right-wing government body?
The only candidate who’s been visible that I’ve noticed so far has been assistant privacy commissioner of Canada Chantal Bernier.
But of course, there’s also Elizabeth Denham, assistant privacy commissioner of Canada who sports and impressive bio.
Who else?
Maybe a current provincial commissioner or active lawyer on the Human Rights front? Or maybe a lawyer currently practicing law in the area of privacy?
It’d be nice to see a list so we can, as citizens, do our homework on the potentials to get a grasp of who they are and what they stand for.
On that note, PrivCom’s latest by Chantal Bernier is online — Extracts from ‘The Reality of Privacy and Security in the 21st Century’ – and it reads almost like a resume:
“… As you may know, I came to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada from the Department of Public Safety, where I had the privilege of serving as Assistant Deputy Minister in the Community Safety and Partnerships Branch.
“As such, I have had substantial engagement in a range of security and intelligence files … ”
My money is on Chantal Bernier …

I fully expect M. Geist to create a short list soon.
Can Jennifer Stoddart get re-appointed?
Can anyone think of someone who could make the short list?

“On that note, PrivCom’s latest by Chantal Bernier is online”
I think the URL has a mistake in it.

Chantal supports those airport body scanners. “They’ll be in a different room and never see the passengers and the files are always deleted and non-printable. And what about cameras (cell phones or compact)?
I don’t think I’d want her in there. I would prefer someone to draw the line and say “enough is enough, you can’t guarantee safety! even if people were dressed like Hannibal Lector in his “travel gear” you won’t be safe!”
Also, anyone who endorses such ’security’ measures should NOT be exempt! Meaning, I want to see every MP, PM, Senator, Transpo Safety Auth exec, minister, commissioner, etc… going through those scanners and being asked to remove their shoes because of a built-in shank or having someone remove your belt and because they can’t tell jeans have metal as a means of structure.
Not once either, continuously! I have security clearance too, and I have to go through these and be humiliated (though at least Canadian security people are nicer than some of the militant pricks that work on the US side.
“No harassment of security personnel will be tolerated” posts the signs. Where’s the “No harassment of citizens will be tolerated”? Oh right, who cares about them.

Robert,
I agree. I don’t think I want here there after reading up on her, but it appears as if she is setting herself up for the job.
