US: world’s worst spammer

p2pnet.net News:- The United States is Number One in the Dirty Dozen list of the worst spam producing countries, according to a UK security firm.

America is exporting 42.11% of all spam, says Sophos..

In second place is South Korea (13.43%) with China (8.44%, including Hong Kong), Canada (5.71%0 and Brazil (3.34%) in the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots, respectively.

“When we first reported on the top spamming countries back in February 2004, the USA had the excuse that the CAN-SPAM act had been in existence for a couple of months,” says Graham Cluley, Sophos senior technology consultant.

“Almost a year and millions of spam messages later, it is quite evident that that the CAN-SPAM legislation has made very little headway in damming the flood of spam.”

Zombie computers - PCs compromised by hackers or virus writers - are sending out more than 40% of the world’s spam, “usually to the complete ignorance of the PC’s owner,” says Cluley.

The remaining members of the Dirty Dozen are, in descending order: 6 - Japan (2.57%); 7 - France (1.37%); 8 - Spain (1.18%); 9 - United Kingdom (1.13%); 10 - Germany (1.03%); 11 - Taiwan (1.00%); and, 12 - Mexico (0.89%) with ‘others’ making up the 17.8% balance.

Interestingly, the US is host to Spamalot, based on the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie.

I say it is time to attack sites that are advertised by spam. However, it is important to actually check the site out before attacking to make sure that the site is not being framed by spammers (Joe Jobbed). Once you see that the site looks spammy, then let ‘em have it. Misleading addresses, phone numbers and such will provide many headaches for those in the spam business. I routinely put my phone number into inquiry forms on spamvertised sites. I then have fun with the company who calls me. Once I have had my fill of fun, i tell the caller that they got their lead from a spammer and that I will never do business witht heir company. I also ask to speak with the caller’s supervisor and thank them for allowing me to waste their company’s time and money.

    no. Make better spam filters.

I’m with you in that i receive a lot of spam, but that is no less dirty an idea than the RIAA’s pet bill which would have allowed them to remotely destroy your computer if they received evidence you were downloading.

So you say that when a bully comes up to you and starts punching you, all you should do is put your arms over your body to block the blows? This is exactly what is happening when a spammer decides to take a crap in your inbox. Once a server or filter processes the spam, the damage is already done. Your computer or the ISP you used had to devote bandwidth and cpu cycles to deal with the spam.

I’m not about causing spammers’ computers to be destroyed. If I wanted to knock out spammer’s networks, there would be no spam networks. I’m only about giving them a tast of their own crap. In all fairness, I believe that Virgina’s Spam law is unconstitutional. 9 years in prison for sending spam is excessive punishment. Crapping on a spammer’s website is fair game though.

By the way, if the RIAA came up with a method to destroy computers and used it against me, I would make sure the RIAA’s computers got the same treatment.

It always seems to us out there not in the US that America is very good at telling people what to do with their pollution yet in fact is the worst polluter in many areas.

I really dunno what the problem is with Spam, to be honest and reading the “let’s play god” comments above, people should remember who pays for the internet, ISP’s are paid to host your signal nothing more, industry is what supports the Internet and I think that a way round would be is to licence advertisers in the same way people can buy a domain, too many complaints, lose the licence and ability to send emails en masse.

It wouldnt take much to work up a plugin for the email clients and it would make peoples live easir if they can choose to turn off unlicensed emails that are not considered personal or official.

Takes the pain and crime out of it all and leaves the spammers to spam themselves as no-one else will read it
