For those of us still using windows the OSSwin project is a good reference.

It’s a list of free open source software on one page, with 41 sections ranging from “Audio editing” tools through “NTP clients” up to “Webgrabbers”.
The page is nearly graphic free, so there’s no distractions or clutter.
However there’s no details for the programs other than the license.
Deceitfully simple and effective.

http://www.slyck.com has a section called “Slyck’s List of File Sharing Programs and Utilities” ( http://www.slyck.com/programs.php ) that details a software’s features including whether or not it contains spyware or adware.

http://www.cleansoftware.org is a great site. Why you are looking at that site consider Linux because it is free and clean as well.
